Investigative sources say the suspect in last week’s knife attack at a Tokyo subway station said his parents scolded him for poor test results when he was in elementary school.
Police searched the home of the 43-year-old suspect, Toda Yoshitaka, in Nagano Prefecture on Monday.
Toda is under arrest on suspicion of attacking and injuring a university student at Todaimae metro station in Tokyo last Wednesday. The station is near the campus of the prestigious University of Tokyo.
The suspect had told investigators that while in junior high, he became unable to attend school due to pressure from his education-minded parents.
He had also said he wanted to show that children will commit crimes if their parents push them too hard.
Toda lived alone in Nagano after moving to the prefecture from Tokyo four years ago. But investigators say there are no signs of him working, and he is believed to have had no income.
