At the 2025 Osaka and Kansai World Expo (Osaka Expo), the “Korea Day” event, which combines Korean tradition, high-tech, and K-culture, drew attention from not only Japanese but also from all over the world. Despite the controversy over the overall poor box office performance of the Osaka Expo, the Korean Pavilion has become one of the top institutions. In fact, the Korean Pavilion has surpassed 350,000 cumulative visitors as of the 13th, drawing attention as a ‘top three’ institution along with the US Pavilion and the Italian Pavilion. Analysts say that it is setting a meaningful foothold in cultural and economic cooperation between Korea and Japan along with the increase in national brand value.

The Korea Day event, held by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and KOTRA at Ray Garden in the expo exhibition hall this afternoon, was successfully held with a total of 350 people, including Industry Minister Ahn Deok-geun, Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Yoo In-chon, Hyundai Motor President Sung Kim, and Korea-Japan Parliamentarians’ Union Min Hong-chul. On the Japanese side, 15 delegates, including Koji Haneda, the government representative of the Osaka Expo, and Hirofumi Yoshimura, the governor of Osaka Prefecture, participated.

Korea Day is one of the official events held by the Expo Organizing Committee at the Osaka Expo held in Yumeshima, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, by designating specific days for each country. “This year marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan,” Minister Ahn said. “I hope this expo will serve as an opportunity and starting point for Korea and Japan to lead the next 50 years and future society together.” CEO Haneda said, “We hope that Korea’s charm will be widely known in Japan and around the world through this exhibition,” adding, “We will support the flow of Korea-Japan exchanges to lead to the next generation.”

Earlier in the morning, a reproduction performance of the Joseon News Agency matrix was held. It is an event that expresses the sea route of the Joseon News Agency, a diplomatic mission between Korea and Japan during the Joseon Dynasty, and symbolically shows the long-standing exchange between the two countries by recreating traditional costumes, protocol, and sea route processions.

At the Expo Hall, “Korean Collection” programs such as K-beauty makeup shows and hanbok fashion shows continued throughout the day. On this evening, the “Korea Day M Concert” was held at the Osaka Expo Arena to showcase a stage where you can experience the heat of K-pop firsthand.

Starting with “Korea Day,” the Osaka Expo Korea Hall will run “Korea Week” for five days from the 12th to the 17th. Together with relevant ministries and private companies, a large-scale complex event will be held to show the excellence of Korean culture, technology, and industry.

Under the theme of “With Hearts,” the Korean Pavilion was built on a large 3,500㎡ site as an experiential space to experience eco-friendly future technologies, including hydrogen fuel cells, and K-pop. The exterior was decorated with a modern reinterpretation of Korean design elements such as hanbok jeogori and Cheongsachorong, and the convergence of traditional and high-tech technologies was maximized by utilizing a large media facade measuring 27m×10m.

Organized by the Ministry of Industry and KOTRA, 93 representative Korean companies, including Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, LG, and SK, and 160 buyers participated in the “Korea Excellent Product Exhibition” to showcase advanced technologies and innovative products that will lead future industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), eco-friendly energy, smart mobility, and bio.

With the Osaka Expo as an opportunity, the government plans to publicize Korea’s technological and cultural competitiveness to the world and actively attract global tourists. A KOTRA official said, “We will do our best to boost the friendly atmosphere toward Korea and lead to revitalization of tourism and industrial exchanges in Korea.”
