In this episode we are going to explore the most unique and one-of-a-kind buildings of Tokyo. ODAIBA The first place that we are going to explore is Odaiba with its extraordinary landmark – Fuji Broadcasting Center. Fuji TV Headquarters by Kenzo Tange, 1996 The building was designed by Kenzo Tange – the architect who revolutionized Japanese tradition. “A spaceship that lands on the Tokyo bay.” “The new Fuji TV Headquarters is a high-profile next-generation broadcasting center focused on innovation.” Let’s go up into the metal sphere, flying in the sky. Kenzo Tange was the forerunner of a new trend: that of combining Japanese tradition with modern and technical Western elements. His idea of space was innovative, aiming towards the sky and at the same time seeing cities not as a radial civic center, but as linear, open and flexible urban framework with small communities. He is considered the founder of the “metabolism” movement, and he is one of the first to speak of the city as a living organism. A unique building of its kind. The superstructure. The main volumes of the headquarters are two 25-storey towers which stand on a shared seven-storey base. The space between the tower (where we are now) is constructed as a matrix of orthogonal structural grid of horizontal and vertical shafts which serve as communication channels, passages and vertical circulation. These skywalks are set in a rectangular superstructure, the floating sphere, occupies one of the voids of the skeleton. From here one can observe the gorgeous skyline of Tokyo, embraced by the sea. The rooftops with gadens and playgrounds. And sandy beaches. “The building’s design emphasises space and openness, which were important concepts that Fuji Television wants to transmit.” An observation platform is located inside the metal sphere. The “Hachitama Spherical Observation Room” is open to public and offers unobstructed views of Tokyo and Mount Fuji. Raising the ball into place was a major engineering challenge which took a total of 9,5 hours. It was balanced horizontally on, and supported by, three beams, before being raised to its finished height of 123 m by hydraulic jacks. Tokyo Tower Azabudai Hills Rainbow Bridge Roppongi Hills Shibaura Island The exterior is cladded with salt-resistant titanium. The building’s structure is highly earthquake resistant. Odaiba is a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay, across the Rainbow Bridge from central Tokyo. Odaiba was initially built for defensive
purposes in the 1850s. Today, Odaiba is the center of entertainment to which ona can dedicate an entire day with the whole family. The replica of the famous Statue of Liberty in Odaiba is located in front of the Rainbow Bridge. Temporarily erected in 1998 as a temporary tribute to the friendship between Japan and France, the statue became so popular that it was made a permanent monument in 2000. Tokyo SkyTree we are going to visit later today. Tokyo SkyTree A few more glances to the Fuji TV Building before we go to the next point. The Yurikamome train line. CHIYODA We age going to explore the other extremly special building of Tokyo – Tokyo International Forum
. It can be easily reached by walk from Ginza. The layers of Tokyo. The Tokyo International Forum is a multi-purpose exhibition center designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects. Tokyo International Forum by Rafael Viñoly Architects, 1997 Tokyo International Forum was built on the site of the Old City Hall, the former government headquarters which was relocated to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (you can find it in the previous episode). The Tokyo International Forum is a huge convention center used primarily for conventions and conferences. Its spaces topped by a hull-structure roof and flying walkways also house a library, an art gallery, cafes and shops. The main building of the complex, the Glass Hall, is made of glass and steel, with spectacular inverted catenary arches supporting the roof. The architects modeled an almond-shaped body on the curve of the subway tracks, which grazes the building, an aspect that makes this building unique in its kind. The structure rises for a total of seven floors above ground. The walk through the building is the very special experience. “The intent of the design was to create a precinct fully accessible to the public and protected from the impacts of the surroundings.” The skywalks flying above the plaza are also accessible. Let’s take a walk through it. “The intent of the design was to create a preci”At night, light reflecting off the surface of the roof truss ribs transforms the structure into a monolithic floating light source illuminating the Glass Hall and profiling it in the Tokyo skyline.” A few more views before we go to the next point. SUMIDA Tokyo SkyTree by Nikken Sekkei, 2012 Tokyo Skytree is a broadcasting and observation tower, the tallest tower in Japan since opening in 2012 – 634 meters. There are two observatories – at 350 m and at 450 m. Breathtaking views of night Tokyo. The tower has seismic proofing, including a central shaft made of reinforced concrete.
