A spherical-shaped venue located in Osaka Bay is set to open later this year, offering a hub for entertainment, culture, art and late-night activities.

Called ‘The Jewelry’, the venue’s entrance is located through a tunnel under the ocean, while its design gives the impression that it sparkles like a gem on water. After sunset, the entire dome lights up.

Aiming to be fully operational come September, the venue partly opened last month to tie in with World Expo which kicked off in Osaka in early April, and which will be running until October.

At present, visitors can use The Jewelry’s open-air café lounge and garden, billed as Kansai’s largest bayside café and offering expansive views of the bay. The building’s annexe is being used as a temporary luggage storage facility for those travelling to World Expo, with The Jewelry located just one station stop away. Once fully opened, the venue says it will provide ‘a next-generation show platform that combines museums and entertainment’, and it expects to attract visitors from around the world.

A statement on the Jewelry website said: “In the future, this facility will be a base for creating excitement in the region, and various events and museums are planned. It aims to become a new cultural hub that spreads the appeal of Osaka and Kansai both domestically and internationally.”
