Sai the only ordinance designated city in the Tohoku region with a population of 1.09 million is known as the city of trees that combines the urban functions of a large city with a verdant natural environment. The city is centered around Sai station where administrative and commercial institutions, hospitals, schools, and other facilities necessary for daily life are compactly located, creating an environment where people can easily enjoy shopping and dining after work or school and realize a fulfilling life. Transportation is centered on Sai station, served by the Namboku and Tosai subway lines, JR lines, and city buses that run throughout the city. Sai City has a relatively comfortable climate compared to other cities in Japan with a maximum temperature of 35° C or higher in the summer and many sunny days in the winter with mid-winter days rare. In the winter, there are many sunny days and mid-winter days are rare. The Saihan was ruled in the early 1600s by date Masamune, an outlying feudal lord. Initially, Sai Castle was located in present-day Iwyama, but the name was changed to Sendai Castle and the castle was moved to present-day Aoyama. Sai is surrounded by mountains and lush greenery not far from the city center and hiking and mountain climbing can be enjoyed in the nearby mountainous areas. Nearby are Mount Zho and Naro Anen. Mount Zho is known for its beautiful seasonal scenery and hot springs where visitors can enjoy outdoor activities and activities such as mountain climbing and skiing. Naro Onen is about an hour’s drive from Sai City and is popular as a hot spring resort with free flowing hot spring water. In addition, Sai City faces the Pacific Ocean and is close to the sea. Matsushima Bay is a 30inut drive from Sai City and Matsushima is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan with beautiful scenery dotted with islands and rocky outcrops. The scenic landscape is a blend of sea and greenery. Since Lord Date Masamune established his castle in 1600, the city has flourished as a castle town of the clan and developed into the economic and administrative center of the Tohoku region. Sai is a recommended regional city in the Tohoku region with a natural environment known as the city of trees, advanced research and development functions known as the academic city and a vibrant urban development that overcame the great East Japan earthquake of 2011 to become a driving force in the Tohoku region
