⁴ᴷ Nagano: Ueda Station (長野県: 上田駅) – Japan Walking Tour (May, 2025)

Last month, I skipped long-distance travel, but now that the weather is getting warmer, I’ve decided to head toward the Noto Peninsula on the Sea of Japan coast this month.

I’m taking a route that passes through Nagano Prefecture on the way, and my first stop was Ueda City. Since it was a Sunday night, the streets were fairly quiet with few people around.

One thing that has always stood out to me is the presence of the Sanada clan’s crest—the “Rokumonsen” (six coins)—which you can see throughout the city. I was surprised to find it even displayed on the train station building.

I started my walk from the Oshiroguchi (Castle Exit) side of the station, walking up Tenjin Street, a gently sloping road. From there, I made my way toward an old-fashioned entertainment district that still retains a strong Showa-era atmosphere. While similar areas have been disappearing across Japan, this one remains, with many of its traditional establishments still operating in a maze-like network of narrow streets.
