Tokushima is a countryside town surrounded by nature, far from Tokyo. It takes about 2 hours by plane from Tokyo✈️ Today, I’m heading to a hotel that’s rumored to have lots of cats! I’ve arrived at Hiwasa Station, where the hotel is located! Hiwasa is a port town close to the sea, known for its beautiful views. That’s the hotel I’ll be staying at today! The hotel’s name is “Shiroi Todai,” which means “White Lighthouse.” Let’s head inside. Huh? I’m already being greeted by a cat. There’s another one! (Welcome) There’s even a white cat here. Looks so cozy while napping. So cute. I just entered the hotel, and I’ve already seen so many cats. You’re adorable too, little brown one. Let’s check in! If you’re lucky, a cat might even help you check in😂 The cost, including meals, is 13,860 yen! ($96.37) Alright, time to start the day! The cats here welcome guests at the entrance. (Welcome) This hotel is home to over 40 cats, and they’re all rescue cats. I’ve never seen a hotel with so many cats. This is the 5th floor, and my room is on the 6th floor. Let’s take the elevator. ? You’re coming with me!? What should I do…? I really wanted to take it to my room, but that’s not possible. So, I pretended to go up, but got off on the same floor😂 That was close! No cats on the 6th floor. Here’s my room. A spacious Japanese-style room! It has an ocean view. Wow! Amazing. Every room in this hotel has an ocean view! I really like this room! The room has everything I need, so I won’t have any problems here. And I can even wear a yukata. Let’s check out the bathroom. It’s not bad😹 But the hotel has a hot spring! !? Wait, there’s a cat here! How did you get here? Alright, let’s ride the elevator together for now. This scene is just too funny😂 4th floor for the hot spring… But I’ll press 5 for the lobby. No more elevator rides for you, okay? I’ve made it to the 4th floor hot spring. There are two types of baths: an indoor bath and an open-air bath. Lately, I only stay at hotels with hot springs😆 That’s how much I love hot springs. And here’s the open-air bath! Isn’t this just perfect!? You can have the ocean all to yourself! It’s not a private bath, so anyone staying here can enjoy this stunning view. I’m so glad to be alive. I have this weird habit of watching ships while naked. That felt amazing. I got ambushed by a cat again. And this one is super talkative. What’s up? Oh, I see. He wants to join me in the hot spring. Sorry, but that’s not allowed… (Why?) (Why? Why?) He’s really speaking in cat language🤭 (Don’t laugh!) (Stop laughing and listen to me!) Alright, alright, I get it. You’re just too cute. This level of cuteness is unfair. But your claws are a bit sharp. We fell in love😂❤️ Isn’t this just too cute? Then another one showed up. Looks like there’s food and litter in the back. That was adorable! By the way, you can use the hot spring even if you’re not staying at the hotel. The entrance fee is 550 yen, and a bath towel costs 120 yen. (100 yen/$0.69) No cat can resist these treats. I bought some at a pet shop beforehand. You’re allowed to give them treats you bring, too. But be careful not to overfeed them. When they eat this treat, their eyes glaze over like they’re high. It reminds me of the cats on Cat Island. He’s licking even though there’s no treat left. I’m going to explore the hotel a bit. Hello. Looks like there are cats on the 4th floor. They even have cages and litter boxes. This is a strange hotel designed for cats to live comfortably. There are even cats on the stairs. For some reason, I feel like I’m in a haunted mansion. The 4th floor seems to have a lot of cats that aren’t used to people. And a lot of them are white. Come here. Oh, you’re a friendly one. You never know until you get closer. All of the cats here are well-fed and healthy. Oh, you were hiding there too. He came over like he wanted to be petted. There are guest rooms here. And rooms for the cats too. Cats keep appearing like magic. Found a beautiful black and white cat! I haven’t seen you before. Then they started arguing. Hey, you two, be nice. Alright, time to go get some dinner. She acts scared but still stops to wait for me😂 Even the cleaning robot is friendly. Cute. I’ll have dinner at this restaurant. For a countryside hotel, it’s surprisingly crowded. Dinner is a full course meal. Starting with fresh sashimi. Sashimi is eaten with soy sauce. Delicious! There’s tuna, sea bream, and bonito. The tuna is so good! The bonito is lightly seared, giving it a great texture. I might be Japanese, but I have no idea what this is. It was chewy and delicious, but I never figured out what it was. Next dish has arrived. This crab gratin looks amazing. The rich cheese and crab flavor is irresistible. There were also shrimp tempura, grilled fish, and bamboo shoots, all of which were fantastic. Here comes the main dish – steak! The tender beef and the aroma of the sauce are mouthwatering. So good!! I can’t stop eating rice with this. The miso soup is delicious too. The beef is so tender that I just keep eating. Dessert is yuzu jelly and fresh fruit. I’m so full! Thank you for the meal! This notebook contains the names and rescue stories of the cats. The stories include things like “abandoned in the hotel parking lot” or “found weak on a rainy night as a kitten.” Many lives have been saved thanks to this hotel. Me: How long have the rescue cats been at the hotel? 👩: The first one came about 7 years ago, I think. (2018) 👩: That cat is no longer here.

The hotel has helped around 20 cats find new homes so far. It’s a bit sad that adoptions are no longer available, but the cats here seem happy. The hotel is spacious, and the cats can freely go outside, which is great. Plus, they get delicious treats. The hotel has both male and female cats, but they’ve all been spayed or neutered. So there’s no risk of unwanted pregnancies. They’re a bit chubby, so let’s get them some exercise. I decided to follow them to see where they go. They were just outside the hotel. But it’s dark out here, with only a few streetlights. Looks like the cats are hanging out in the parking lot. The atmosphere is a bit eerie. Do they become more wild when they’re outside? You’re so dark, I almost didn’t see you! I feel like I got a glimpse of their nighttime personalities. I’m back. Before long, the cats returned from their night stroll. Welcome back. There’s always a night shift cat on duty at the front desk. Good night💤 Got myself an ice cream and headed back to my room. Time for my breakfast too. With a beautiful view. Breakfast is mostly Japanese-style. It was delicious. By the way, rice and bread are all-you-can-eat. You even toast your own bread. Enjoying pizza toast while gazing at the ocean… it doesn’t get better than this. Let’s go for a little morning walk. The area around the hotel is full of nature. It’s April now, and the temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius. It’s a really comfortable season. The view from here is amazing too! I haven’t seen such beautiful blue in a long time. The ocean in Tokyo isn’t this clear😂 This area is also known as a sea turtle nesting site. There’s a sea turtle museum here, but it’s currently under renovation. It should reopen around the summer of 2025. You can see many sea turtles at the museum, so it’s a great place to visit along with the hotel. This beach is one of the few places where wild sea turtles come to lay their eggs. They come ashore from July to August. They come at night to lay their eggs in the sand. Back in 1968, there were 308 landings. But the number has been decreasing, with only 6 landings in 2024. So unfortunately, public viewing of the nesting is not available right now. I hope more sea turtles will return in the future. I see something interesting over there. There’s a small red torii gate⛩️ Made it. Is this a small shrine on an island? It feels a bit mystical. It’s called Tachishima Shrine. Lucky dog to have a beach as its daily walking route. Hiwasa is a port town, so fishing is a part of life here. There are lots of boats and fishermen around. It has a club-like rhythm. That’s the town’s symbol, Hiwasa Castle. I spotted a cat! But it seems a bit wary of me. Is this his boat?⛴️ The walk back to the hotel was beautiful too. I found a charming little shrine. Every part of this scenery feels new and memorable. Feels like a house from a movie. I saw two cats near the ocean. They don’t seem to be hotel cats. They’re very cautious, so probably not. Their expressions show the strength of living in the wild. I’m back at the hotel! There were more cats behind the hotel too. (Who are you!?) Oh, we met yesterday! It’s Kyu, the one who was sleeping in a funny position. But were you always this friendly? Maybe it’s the power of treats. Cute! The other cats are still a bit cautious. But after a while, they came out. I’m back! It’s a bit sad to say goodbye to the cats.
