(Mainichi/Yo Naito)
The first tournament of the season for traditional “Ushi no Tsunotsuki” bullfighting began on May 3 at the Ojiya Bullring in the city of Ojiya, Niigata Prefecture. The loud shouts of “Yoshitaa” (meaning “keep going” or “well done”) from the handler, called “seko,” echoed through the venue, and the powerful clash of the bulls excited about 1,000 spectators. A unique feature of this event is that it ends in a draw to avoid hurting the bulls.
