Wakayama Food Tour: Japan’s Best Ramen, Tuna, Meharizushi & More!

hello from Tottori today we are travelling to Wakayama let’s take a look at the map we will make a brief stop at Osaka, changing to a local train we’ll be taking the green car to Osaka,
just to see what it’s like fancy overhead storage excessive reclining power tons of leg room + foot rest i wanted to get some video editing done on
the train but the table is awkwardly far away oh well it’s not much more comfortable than
the regular seats to be honest not worth the $30 in my opinion switch to a local train at Shin-Osaka the local train takes about 50 minutes let’s find some lunch Ide Shoten, voted best ramen in Japan 1998 it’s about 1:30 and there is still a queue this shop only serves Wakayama style ramen there are only about 15 seats inside the scent of boiling pork stock fills the shop and surrounding area a relatively thin broth the flavour is halfway between shoyu
and tonkotsu very deep pork flavour but not overly rich like tonkotsu broth thin straight noodles extremely chewy and they hold the broth surprisingly well this is extremely flavourful ramen but everything is well balanced the soy sauce flavour is mild the main flavour is the delicious pork stock pork belly char siu very tender and flavourful kamaboko and crunchy bamboo shoots the only available condiments are salt and pepper black pepper and soy sauce make a fantastic combination this is a flavour profile everyone will enjoy let’s try the sushi a tiny sliver of mackerel and some ginger it was only a dollar though… heavy vinegar rice and fish it’s a strong flavour but very enjoyable it goes well with the rich pork broth the contrast in flavours make them a perfect pair an extremely satisfying combination to eat this was an outstanding bowl of ramen it’s very easy to see why this shop is so popular incredibly well prepared ramen but lighter broths are my favourite it was fantastic to try what was once considered the best ramen in Japan see you for dinner Mineya, a highly rated popular izakaya tuna is a specialty of Wakayama kanpai very exotic otoshi …but always delicious Wakayama oysters very fresh and soft very cucumber-y surprisingly served with a dashi ponzu it adds a rich umami flavour to the fresh oyster this sauce is outstanding strong citrus, soy and dashi flavours the oyster tastes so fresh and bright much less rich than other varieties i’ve tried in Japan 9.5/10 Wakayama’s famous bluefin tuna the quality looks outstanding somewhere between akami and chu-toro wow. outrageously soft and flavourful served around room temperature the fat starts to melt as it hits your tongue this is the softest tuna i’ve ever eaten the pieces are beautiful 10/10 i also ordered some grilled tuna which came out infinitely
larger than i was expecting… it said 2 dollars on the menu, but i guess that is the price per 100g…oops definitely didn’t mean to order 2 pounds of grilled tuna lmao fresh off the grill, the aroma is intoxicating this is a tuna cheek extremely tender and moist this is a cross-cut tail section this is the greatest piece of tuna i’ve ever eaten the inside texture is more similar to braised beef than tuna combined with the charred salty outside, it is perfection the cheek is also excellent, softer meat but it has less charred area
due to the location of the meat minced fatty tuna the raw tuna has a much more luxurious richness the cooked meat is so unbelievably soft and moist it has the same texture as braised short rib or brisket i can’t believe how good this is this was some of the best tuna sashimi i’ve ever eaten but the grilled pieces were far more delicious easily the best tuna i’ve ever eaten i still can’t believe how moist and soft they were… but we still have a drink, let’s order another dish beef tataki incredible marbling… served with lots of garlic chips, green onions, sesame seeds and ponzu sauce aaaand it’s also outstanding the intramuscular fat in Japanese beef is much different than in Canada it melts at a much lower temperature, creating a rich and smooth texture as you chew, you can feel the meat melting and releasing more flavour each of the condiments enhance the beef’s flavour and texture incredible some of the most well prepared food i’ve ever eaten a must try restaurant in Wakayama 100% order the grilled tuna see you tomorrow Sohonke Mehariya Wakayamaten, a well known shop
for Wakayama cuisine specifically for meharizushi, rice balls wrapped in salted mustard greens surprisingly large meharizushi loaded miso soup oden and salad itadakimasu an incredibly healthy looking lunch i love this style of miso soup very comforting flavour i was given very detailed instructions on how to use this paper lol the rice is sushi rice the mustard green is salty and green tasting it feels substantial and healthy at the same time this whole meal feels really healthy beef tendon the miso sauce is sweet, very strong flavour the tendon has a pleasant chewy/cartilage-y texture konnyaku very chewy gummy texture the oden is all about the miso flavour, it’s delicious this is a meal you could eat every day and feel amazing these are delicious but it’s really just sushi rice wrapped in a salted leaf there’s a little bit of soy sauce as well i really enjoy the green flavour but this will probably just be decent
for most people this is good, healthy, everyday food extra good after eating 2 pounds of tuna last night well prepared, simple, healthy food 7.5/10 this is a skippable Wakayama specialty, tuna beats leaf rice 10/10 times see you for dinner a Japanese-Filipino restaurant i have no choice but to try it mandatory karaoke machine with a menu like this, you are guaranteed good food all the classic dishes 10/10 ambiance sinigang and some beautiful looking lechon kawali it’s been months since i’ve used a fork served with a soy/chili/vinegar sauce crispy, soft and rich pork belly the vinegar sauce contrasts the richness perfectly 9.2/10 let’s try the sinigang strong sour tamarind flavour the sour taste is very strong but very delicious it’s not a balanced flavour profile at all eggplant very tender and flavourful pork belly so tender and rich the richness goes extremely well with the sour broth impossible for deep fried pork belly to be bad… incredible when combined with the vinegar sauce a delicious detour from Japanese food sinigang is so sour yet addicting if you’ve never experienced a Filipino family restaurant, i 100% recommend it i reduced the volume for the video but the karaoke was hilariously loud 10/10 performance and also incredibly delicious food a fantastic Filipino dining experience in Wakayama anyways, i hope you enjoyed this video please like and subscribe if you did i hope you’ll continue to follow my food adventure in Japan
