This video follows the classic and scenic route through Hakone, starting at Hakone Yumoto Station. I began the journey on the iconic red sightseeing train, which winds through the forested mountains and gradually climbs its way to Gora. The train ride itself is slow and calming, allowing time to take in the surrounding nature and switchbacks unique to this route.
From Gora Station, I transferred to the cable car heading toward Sōzan. This short ride offered elevated views of the landscape, preparing for the next stage—the Hakone Ropeway.
The ropeway from Sōzan to Ōwakudani provided some of the most memorable views of the trip. As the gondola glided over the steaming valley, I could see the sulfur vents actively releasing gas into the air. The sight and smell are distinct, and it’s one of the most well-known features of this volcanic region. On a clear day, which I was lucky to have, Mt. Fuji came into view—a breathtaking moment I captured on camera.
Continuing on the ropeway, I descended toward Lake Ashinoko. Upon arrival, I boarded the pirate ship cruise that crosses the lake. The cruise is smooth and offers a peaceful way to take in the expansive water, surrounding mountains, and scattered torii gates near the shoreline.
The journey ended at Hakonemachi-ko, a quiet lakeside district with historical significance. This area is home to remnants of the old Tokaido Road and offers a calm contrast to the more touristy areas of Hakone.
This route is one of the best ways to experience the natural beauty and unique transportation options Hakone has to offer—all in a single day.
