Japan in May 2025! In May, there are many festival events in Japan. In this video, 1. May 2025 in Japan, Weather, Travel Tips & Essential Guide 2. Beautiful Nature Spots in Japan 3. May Festivals in Japan 4. Seasonal Food Guide I will introduce you to the following. Let’s begin! May 2025 in Japan May in Japan is even warmer than April. This is the season when flowers and trees are noticeably green all over the country. Japan is a long vacation month and many events take place during this month. 1. May 2025 in Japan,Weather, Travel Tips & Essential Guide This is the season when the days are pleasant with low humidity and fresh greenery becomes more noticeable. In eastern and western Japan, including Tokyo, the temperature will often rise to around 77°F (25°C). During the day, it is likely to feel hot under the sun. At night, the temperature drops to around 59°F (15°C) in Tokyo and other cities. May is a relatively stable, sunny month, but by the end of the rainy season, rainfall is more frequent. So we recommend that you check the weather and prepare for rain. Clothing should be temperature changes, such as short sleeves during the day and long sleeves at night, as the temperature difference will be greater than in April. It would be nice to have outerwear that can be quickly removed and put on. Hokkaido averages about 66.4°F (18°C) during the day and 50°F (10°C) at night. The difference in temperature is less than in Honshu, making it a comfortable time of year. A light knit or similar would be nice. Okinawa and Kyushu average 78.8°F (26°C) during the day and 69.8°F (21°C) at night. I think the climate is such that you can spend time in short sleeves. It is also the same high pollen season as in April. The measures are Wear a mask. TWwear glasses. wash hands and face clean after going out, ventilate the room. (Air purifiers are recommended because opening windows brings in pollen.) I think this measure will make you comfortable. Every year in early May in Japan, everywhere is crowded. Because there is a holiday from about April 29 to May 6. This period is one of the most crowded consecutive holidays in Japan. Hotel and Shinkansen reservations will be hard to come by, so be sure to secure your accommodations and transportation as soon as possible! Alternatively, changing the dates is one thing. 2. Beautiful Nature Spots in Japan In May, fresh greenery spreads across the country. It is the perfect season to enjoy nature. Here are some spots where you can enjoy beautiful green scenery and flowers! Shikisai-no-oka (Hokkaido) This is a sightseeing spot in Biei where nature remains as it is. From mid-May to early October, visitors can enjoy about 30 types of flowers and grasses. Here, visitors can appreciate seasonal flowers. Tulips and cosmos are at their best this season. Get off at Mimagyu Station on the JR Furano Line and walk 25 minutes. Ashikaga Flower Park (Ibaraki Prefecture) More than 350 wisteria trees are in full bloom, including a large wisteria tree over 160 years old with a 600-tatami-mat-long wisteria trellis, an 80-m-long white wisteria tunnel, Kibana wisteria, and more. From May 7 to May 18, it is open from 8:00 to 20:30. You can enjoy the fantastic lighting up at night. Get off at Ashikaga Flower Park Station on the JR Ryomo Line and walk for 3 minutes. Kamikochi (Nagano Prefecture) It is also part of the Chubu Mountain National Park and is designated as a national cultural asset. It is a mountainous area at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters, with many lodging facilities and hot springs. Around mid to late May, temperatures warm up and hiking can be enjoyed. There is a dedicated shuttle bus and other transportation options to Kamikochi, so you can choose the mode of transportation that best suits your plans. It takes about 4 hours to get there from Shinjuku Station in Tokyo by train and bus. 3. May Festivals in Japan In May, many traditional events are held throughout Japan. In this issue, we will introduce a selection of attractive Matsuri. Hakata Dontaku (Fukuoka Prefecture) This festival is held annually on May 3 and May 4 in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. This is a traditional folk event originating from “Hakata Matsubayashi” which started about 840 years ago. As an important festival that embodies Japanese history and culture, it attracts more than 2 million people from Japan and abroad. Around 9:00 a.m., a group of Hakata Matsubayashi performers gather at Kushida Shrine for a festive tour of the city, including Fukuoka Prefectural Office, Hakata Station, and businesses, to receive purification ceremonies. Around the same time, various dances by the Dontaku group will be performed at about 30 performance stands around the city, mainly in the Tenjin and Hakata districts, until 9:00 p.m. at the longest. The performance can be seen near Hakata Station, The performance can be seen near Hakata Station, which is very accessible. Yabusame Matsuri (Shizuoka Prefecture) This festival is held every year on May 4 to 6 at the Mt. Fuji Hongu Sengen Taisha shrine in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture. This is an old-fashioned festival with a history of over 800 years. On the 5th of the main festival, after the parade in the city, a heroic yabusame (horseback archery) ceremony will be held in the cherry blossom field in the precincts of the shrine, with people dressed as Kamakura warriors hunting. Get off at Fujinomiya Station on the Minobu Line and walk for 10 minutes. Aoi Matsuri (Kyoto) This festival is held on May 15 in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. It is famous for its procession of people dressed in elegant Heian-period dynasty costumes and decorated with hollyhock leaves. This procession goes from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to Kamigamo Shrine via Shimogamo Shrine. The procession is over 500 people in total and stretches about 1 km in length. Various rituals will be held at both Shimogamo-jinja Shrine and Kamigamo-jinja Shrine prior to the day of the procession. The Kyoto Imperial Palace is 5-minutes walk from Imadegawa Station on the subway Karasuma Line. Kanda Matsuri (Tokyo) The festival is held May 9 to 11 in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward. This is a traditional festival of Kanda Myojin that has continued since the Edo period. On May 11, elegant palanquins, portable shrines, and various floats carrying the Ujigami deity are paraded through 108 Ujiko town councils to purify the town. What makes this festival interesting are the elaborate performances and processions. During this period, Kanda Myojin can only be reached by public transportation. Get off at JR Ochanomizu Station on the Chuo and Sobu Lines and walk for 10 minutes. Sanja Matsuri (Tokyo) This festival is held May 16 to 18 at Asakusa Shrine in Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo. It is known as an early summer tradition in Asakusa, a downtown area that still retains an Edo-style atmosphere. Its history is old, having begun in the early Edo period (1603-1867). The first day of the festival begins with a grand procession at 1:00 p.m., followed by the dedication of the Binzasara-mai dance and the Mikoshi-tamaire (portable shrine spirit insertion). Asakusa Shrine is 7-minutes walk from Asakusa Station on the Tobu Line. 4. Seasonal Food Guide Next, I would like to introduce some of the best gourmet foods in Japan during this season! Cherry (Yamagata, Hokkaido, Yamanashi) Japanese cherries grow to be sweet and rich in flavor due to the large seasonal temperature differences. The Sato Nishiki variety from Yamagata Prefecture is particularly famous. Fresh Sato Nishiki, with its thin skin filled with rich sweetness, can only be found in Japan. Mitsuba (Chiba, Ibaraki, Aichi, Shizuoka, Osaka) Mitsuba is a fragrant leafy vegetable. It is mainly grown hydroponically and has a beautiful green color throughout. For this reason, it is also used in high-class restaurants and other places. It is eaten in Japanese soup and fried foods. Bonito (Kagoshima, Kochi, Shizuoka) Kochi Prefecture, famous as the home of bonito, has one of the highest catches in Japan. Kochi Prefecture’s bonito is fished by one-piece, which keeps it fresh. The fresh bonito is grilled on straw to give it an exquisite flavor. It is so famous that there are specialty stores in Kochi Prefecture. Sea bream (Ehime, Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Hyogo, Shimane) In Japan, sea bream is hunted throughout the country, but natural sea bream from Ehime Prefecture is an exquisite product. Aquaculture is also popular in Uwakai production. Fresh sea bream is excellent when served with sushi and other dishes. Firefly squid (Hyogo, Toyama, Tottori Prefectures) They are called “firefly squid” because they glow like fireflies. The sight of firefly squid glowing blue and white in the dark sea is very mysterious. Firefly squid caught during this season have soft flesh, rich flavor, and sweetness. In Japan, fresh firefly squid is served as sashimi or with vinegared miso. How was it? May is a wonderful time of year in Japan, when the country comes alive with Matsuri and the beauty of greenery. In the middle of the year, you can enjoy the Matsuri and seasonal delicacies to the fullest, with clear skies and relatively empty sightseeing areas.
