【一泊二日】新幹線で函館へ!五稜郭・夜景・海鮮グルメを巡るおすすめ旅行プラン [2 days, 1 night] Head to Hakodate by Shinkansen!
Hello, this is Ryo. This time I came to Hakodate. The reason I came to Hakodate was to see how much sightseeing I could do in a short two-day trip. And it’s by land, not by plane. In conclusion, it was a very fulfilling trip. The schedule looks something like this On the first day, we plan to arrive in Hakodate around noon. Transfer to the Bay Area for lunch. Then, take a stroll around the Motomachi area, where you will find churches and important cultural properties. Since we were there, we decided to take a cruise around Hakodate Port. Then check in to the hotel For dinner, we had seafood dishes. Finally, we went to see the night view of Mt. Hakodate and the first day came to an end. On the second day, we took a morning walk and visited the Hakodate Morning Market. Have breakfast at the hotel After checking out of the hotel, we took the tram to Goryokaku. Then, I’ll buy some souvenirs at Rokkatei Goryokaku store and head home around noon. Our stay in Hakodate will be exactly 24 hours. What kind of trip will it be? Please enjoy this video until the end. Let’s get started.
If you take the Hokkaido Shinkansen Hayabusa, you can arrive at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station from Tokyo in about 4 hours without changing trains.
The Hayabusa train stops at very few stations, and once it passes Ueno and Omiya it does not stop until Sendai. Since I’m based in Tochigi, I took the Tohoku Shinkansen from Utsunomiya to Sendai and then changed to the Hayabusa. It’s a pleasant journey compared to the three or four hour drive I often have to make. Once you enter the Seikan Tunnel, Once you enter the Seikan Tunnel, you will arrive on the Hokkaido side in about 25 minutes. we have arrived on the Hokkaido side. It’s been so long since I last came to Hokkaido that I can’t even remember the last time. And then we arrived at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. To get to downtown Hakodate, you need to transfer to the Hakodate Main Line. The temperature is 13 degrees. It’s about 10 degrees different from the Kanto region.
Mount Hakodate comes into view. It took about 15 minutes to get from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station to Hakodate. The trip to Hakodate took about four and a half hours, but it didn’t feel that long because I was enjoying the view while having breakfast and researching information about Hakodate in advance. Hakodate City has a population of about 230,000, so it’s not too crowded and is quite comfortable. First, head to the hotel, drop off your luggage, and then go sightseeing. And this is Century Marina Hakodate where we will be staying. It’s a great hotel, This time, we will be staying in the most luxurious room. 10 minutes walk from the hotel First, we arrived at the Bay Area where the Red Brick Warehouse is located. While Yokohama only has two Red Brick Warehouses, Hakodate has a whopping seven, housing a variety of shops and restaurants. They have a particularly wide selection of accessories and miscellaneous goods, so if you have the time, you could look around for hours. Of course, there are souvenir shops, clothing stores, shoe stores, etc. If you want to enjoy shopping, we recommend the Red Brick Warehouses. I don’t have much time this time, so I won’t go into details about each shop. This is the historic Hakodate Beer Hall. Here you can enjoy draft beer delivered straight from the factory. And this is the popular burger shop Lucky Pierrot. I was looking at burger restaurants and now I’m hungry, so I’ll have lunch. So, one of the purposes of a trip to Hakodate is to verify whether the authentic conveyor belt sushi in Hakodate is really delicious. The place we visited was Marukatsu Suisan, a fish shop directly managed by the Marukatsu Group, a long-established fish store in Hakodate, located next to the Red Brick Warehouse. This is the main store, and in the Kanto region there are also stores in Yokohama, Shiodome, and Fujisawa. It’s shipped directly from the market in Hakodate Port, so it’s bound to be delicious. It seems that you can choose the food you want to eat from this fish tank. So let’s order. Since I’m not driving this time, I can enjoy a beer without hesitation. I immediately ordered shrimp, scallops, and squid. When you think of Hokkaido, scallops come to mind. It’s melt-in-your-mouth tender and super fresh. It was like a completely different food from the scallops you can get at the supermarket. As we would expect from a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, the sushi keeps coming. This is medium fatty tuna and salmon. The scallops were so delicious that I also ordered seared scallops. The tuna was also delicious. Next time I’d like to try Oma tuna. And this is a canned grill set where oysters and scallops are steamed in a can,
and it costs 3,000 yen. The oysters and scallops are large and satisfying to eat. Wow, the fresh sushi and steamed food were absolutely delicious. So, The conveyor belt sushi in Hakodate is really delicious, so I recommend you try it. Now that we’ve filled our stomachs, we’ll take a stroll around the Motomachi area, home to a group of traditional buildings. If you head towards Mount Hakodate along Kaiko-dori, you will first come across Nijūkenzaka Hill. It is a good idea to go up this hill and then visit the church, Hachimanzaka Hill, the former British Consulate, etc. This is Nijūkenzaka, and the name comes from the fact that the road is 36 meters wide. I plan to take the tram the next day. A fairly steep slope continues for about 300m. This is the Higashi Honganji Hakodate Betsuin, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property and is currently undergoing restoration work. we’ve reached the top of the hill. There are several picturesque slopes at the foot of Mt. Hakodate, and Nijūkenzaka and Hachimanzaka in particular are lit up during the Christmas season, making them particularly romantic places. Now, let’s go to the church area. You can see all three of Hakodate’s major churches here. First, let’s start with the Catholic Motomachi Church. The beautiful brick building makes it look like a European town. Unfortunately, photography is prohibited so we can’t show you the inside, but inside the cathedral there is an altar given by the Pope, and it is a magnificent church. Just past the Catholic Motomachi Church is a hill called Chacha Nobori, and on either side of it are two churches. Let’s start with a look at St. John’s Church in Hakodate. The previous church was Catholic, but this one is a denomination called Bridge Church,
which acts as a bridge between Protestantism and Catholicism. Next, let’s take a look at the Hakodate Orthodox Church. This is a Russian Orthodox church that stands on a particularly large site. The roof shape resembles that of the Kremlin. As you leave the Hakodate Orthodox Church, you will come across the famous Hachimanzaka slope. You can see all the way to Hakodate Port, and it seems to be a very popular spot during the illumination season. And then we came to Motomachi Park. On top of the hill is the Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall, an important cultural property. Let’s go and check it out. Tickets for a combined tour of the former British Consulate are 500 yen. It is a very large building with many rooms of various sizes and purposes. There are also original toilets, a conference room, and a luxurious reception room. Is this a hall for concerts and ballroom dancing?
There is a space the size of a gymnasium. From this terrace you can see the whole of Hakodate Port. The view is so good you can even see the Maritime Self-Defense Force ships. It seems that the Dutch luxury cruise ship Noordam is also calling on the port that day. What a wonderful view! Next, we will visit the former British Consulate along Motoizaka Slope. There are souvenir shops and a cafe inside where you can enjoy afternoon tea. It seems like someone is there. The current streetscape is filled with buildings, but back then it looked something like this. You can also see the history of the opening of the port of Hakodate and a bird’s-eye view of the time. And if you look over here, It seems like you can become a stylish girl. that was the Motomachi area. I wanted to wander around a bit more,
but then I headed for a cruise around Hakodate Port. This is the Kanemori Bay Cruise, which takes you around Hakodate Port in about 15 minutes. The fare is a little high at 2,000 yen per person, but since it is a private charter and you can go around Hakodate Port in a short time, it is a recommended cruise if you just want to take a short boat ride. As the ship departs from the red brick dock, you’ll feel like you’re sightseeing in Europe. This is Hakodate Port. The front of the boat is completely covered with windows, so you can enjoy the scenery without feeling cold. You can see Noordam on your right. And on the left is a Self-Defense Force ship that can be seen from Motomachi. This appears to be the 5,000-ton escort ship “Suzutsuki.” It’s impressive when you see it up close. And this is the shipyard, where the launching ceremony is held at Hakodate Dock. Although it is a little far away, you can see Goryokaku Tower. Hakodate Port is used for many purposes, including as a harbor for ferries between Aomori and Hakodate, luxury cruise ships, shipyards, oil dolphins, and bonded warehouses. However, Hakodate Fishing Port, famous for landing squid, is located outside the port. If you want to cruise outside of Hakodate Port, you need to take the Blue Moon sightseeing boat, which departs from the hamburger restaurant. And then we returned to the Red Brick Warehouse. Although it was a short cruise, it was nice to enjoy the sea breeze and the atmosphere of the port. By the way, this Red Brick Dog has a great atmosphere. It was about a 3 hour walk, but we got around quite a bit. Then let’s check into the hotel. There was a square in front of the hotel, and beautiful cherry blossoms were blooming. Normally, it is cherry blossom season, so on this day, even though it was a weekday, there were 500 guests staying at the hotel.
There’s a queue at the check-in counter. This time we were treated as VIPs because we were staying in the highest quality room, and the concierge guided us to our room and we checked in. The room is the 87 square meter Royal Suite on the 13th floor Royal Floor. The large room has a huge corner window, offering a great view of Mount Hakodate and Hakodate Port. Below me spreads Seaport Park, where the Mashu Maru Ferry Memorial Museum is located, and the cruise ship Noordam is moored. What a great location! It’s not just the rooms that are amazing. You can also see Mount Hakodate from this bathroom. And what’s more… This hotel has free-flowing hot spring water from its own source. What’s more, the ingredients in this hot spring are amazing. The spring quality is sodium chloride strong salt hot spring, and the color is brown due to the chloride rays containing iron ions, but it is a hot spring that is rich in ingredients that have skin-beautifying effects. We plan to post a separate video later on about the hotel and hot springs, so please be sure to check that out too. Then let’s go to dinner. Dinner will be at Hakodate Dining Gaya near the station. This is a popular seafood restaurant in Hakodate, so I reserved a private room in advance. This time we will be having crab dishes as the main course. First, we grilled some large surf clams and scallops while waiting for the crab. And then came the snow crab. It’s packed with meat. This is Hokkaido, isn’t it? This is a luxurious dish of shredded snow crab mixed with crab miso. It’s not often you can eat such a big surf clam. And authentic Hokkaido scallops. I ordered a seafood bowl with squid sashimi, crab, salmon roe, sweet shrimp, and scallops for 3,500 yen. My wife ordered this king crab bowl. The price is 6000 yen.
The amount of body is not enough. We don’t usually eat king crab, so I let my wife enjoy it to the fullest. We ordered as much as we wanted, and the total came to about 20,000 yen, so I think it was far better value for money than a course meal at a high-end restaurant. ow, it was a very satisfying seafood dish. Let’s go to Mount Hakodate to see the night view. We were planning to take a taxi to the ropeway,、 but we were advised that it would be cheaper to go to the top of the mountain and then take the ropeway back, and we would only have to wait in line once, so we decided to go straight to the top. This is the ropeway station. There seem to be a lot of buses running too. After walking for a while, the night view came into view. we have arrived. If you’re unlucky, there may be days when the fog makes it impossible to see the night view, so be careful, especially during the rainy season from May to July. But on this day, the night view was perfect. That’s great. The night view of Mt. Hakodate has been awarded three stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan, and it seems to attract tourists from all over the world. If my overseas friends asked me for recommended sightseeing spots in Japan, I would recommend the night view of Hakodate without hesitation. And a kind foreign tourist took a commemorative photo for us. Since it is such a good opportunity, On the way back, we took the ropeway down the mountain, but there was a 20-minute queue. I recommend taking the ropeway as you can see a great view. It was a great night view. And then we went back to the hotel As a suite room perk, we can enjoy free drinks at the hotel bar, so we’ll have a cocktail. VIP treatment is great. Although it was only a half-day tour, we were able to see quite a lot and it was a very fulfilling first day. Now I’m going to enjoy the beautiful night view and the hot springs and get some rest. It’s a bit gloomy, but I’m going to take a walk to the Hakodate Morning Market. This is the Seafood Morning Market Square. It’s about a 5-minute walk from Century Marina to Hakodate Morning Market. It’s only 6am, but there are quite a few customers here. Here, they will cook your favorite seafood on the spot. They sell live luxury ingredients such as king crab and shrimp. There is even a squid fishing pond. If you catch it and make it into sashimi, it will be super fresh. There are dozens of shops like this one. There are many shops outside the building. And this is Donburi Yokocho, where seafood bowl restaurants are lined up. It’s quite reasonable. If you want to eat seafood rice bowl, you can’t go wrong here. Then we’ll go back to the hotel and have breakfast. Breakfast is a buffet. It’s 7am and it’s super crowded. However, because we were treated as VIPs here, we were shown to a private room without waiting. If you stay on the Royal Floor, you can choose four special menu items in addition to the buffet. Scallops, peony shrimp, tuna, and abalone sashimi, Hokkaido beef loin steak, This egg benedict actually contains snow crab. This is clam miso soup served hot. Wow, it was a great breakfast. We are currently working hard on the hotel video, so please wait a little longer. Now, let’s check out and head to Goryokaku. First, leave your luggage in the coin lockers on the second floor of Hakodate Station and get light on your feet. Then, take the tram from Hakodate Station. I was able to use my transportation IC card properly. The fare is 230 yen. After about 20 minutes, we arrived in front of Goryokaku Park. After getting off the station, it’s about a 10 minute walk to Goryokaku. Arrived. Before it gets too crowded, let’s start by taking in the view from Goryokaku Tower. It is recommended to purchase tickets for Goryokaku Tower in advance using the copy machine at a convenience store, as you can get a cheaper price and you can ride the elevator without having to line up at the ticket counter on the day. It’s only 9:30 in the morning, but it’s already so crowded. First, let’s look at the empty Mount Hakodate area. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Shimokita and Tsugaru peninsulas, ut unfortunately, on this day the sky was covered in gloomy clouds. Now, let’s say hello to Toshizo Hijikata and take a look at Goryokaku. That’s great. It’s more of a work of art than a fortress. It was April 25th, and the cherry blossoms were about 50% in bloom. I wanted to see Goryokaku in full bloom, but it was well worth the trip. Now let’s go to Goryokaku. In fact, the lower floor is also an observation deck, which is empty so you can take your time looking around. It’s the same as Kyoto Tower. Unfortunately it’s raining, but we’ll be able to see it. We wanted to bring you cherry blossoms in full bloom in clear skies, but Hokkaido has had bad weather recently. However, the large-scale earthworks, moats, and stone walls are impressive. And this is the Hakodate Magistrate’s Office. It looked small from the air, but it’s a pretty big building. Here are some photos and floor plans from that time. What a great layout! And this is a model of the skeleton. It’s amazing they managed to restore such a large building. There is a theater and a panel that displays an explanation of the people when you place a photo, so you can learn about the history of Goryokaku in an easy-to-understand way. Finally, let’s buy some souvenirs to take home at Rokkatei, a long-established confectionery shop in Hokkaido. It was great to be so close to Goryokaku. I’m grateful that Rokkatei’s sweets are sold individually. You can buy your favorite sweets little by little. There are also small bags containing a variety of different items for souvenirs. The view from here is also wonderful. The total cost for 10 items was 3630 yen. Finally, I bought some bento at Hakodate Station and headed home. That was my 2-day, 1-night trip to Hakodate overland. What did you think? My impression was that it wasn’t too hectic and I was able to get around all the important places. We enjoyed fresh sushi, crab and other seafood dishes, a luxurious hotel stay, and even hot springs, making it a very fulfilling stay. Even though it is in Hokkaido, it is close to Honshu, so it may be a tourist destination that you can drop in to unexpectedly. And if you want delicious food and a spectacular view, this is the place to be. Well then, I’ll excuse myself here. Thank you for watching until the end. See you in the next video.
