Crazy Pile of Fresh Cabbage! Sneaking into Osaka’s Funniest Okonomiyaki Spot!
[Music] I’ve gone undercover for a full day at Naoya, the funniest okonomiyaki restaurant in Osaka. Okonomiyaki, born in Osaka about 100 years ago, is now a sold food for Japanese. Think of it as a Japanese style savory pancake. A delightful mish mash of flour, cabbage, pork, seafood, or whatsoever grilled on a hot plate. The aromatic sauce and creamy mayo get all tangled up, creating a burst of deliciousness with every bite. Now, here’s a question. Why is Naoya the funniest restaurant in Osaka? Haha. Well, that’s because the owner used to be a comedian. As you may know, Osaka is famous as the holy land of comedy, where the laughter culture is seriously strong. So, how did this funny man end up flipping gooniyaki in the center of Osaka? I’ll show you his professional skills along with his unique story. All right, then let’s peek inside his popular restaurant from the morning preparation to the last order of the night. Nawa’s main store is close by the Aaza station in Osaka. It’s right in the heart of the city, but still has that cozy local vibe. This is the owner, Mr. Nawoya Masuda, a super chill and friendly guy. He currently runs three locations in Osaka, and you’ll often find him bouncing between them. All right, let’s dive into the morning prep. Now, he has pride and joy, the cabbage. They’re so serious about cabbage that they change suppliers depending on the season to ensure its [Music] quality. Nya’s okonomiyaki is all about the cabbage. They use very little flour to create this amazing crispy and textured delight. And the amount of cabbage they prep is just on another level. Now, here’s a funny bit. Nawiasan used to be a comedian inspired by his grandpa who also ran an okonomyaki restaurant. He spent 15 years acquiring okonomiyaki skills, even while chasing laughs on stage. But his dream of running his own place never faded. And in 2019, he finally opened his first restaurant with the philosophy, a place where everyone can laugh and have a good time. It’s no surprise that his friendly personality has attracted a bunch of his comedian friends and even some famous faces to his restaurants. The chopping continues on and on. You can really feel the owner’s intense passion for [Music] cabbage. 30 minutes till showtime. I’m getting excited just watching. The phone keeps ringing off the hook with reservations. You can tell how popular they are. It’s 11:30 a.m. and the lunch service starts. Guess what? The cooking method is the owner’s own creation, perfected through the 15 years of training. [Music] He’s got a twohop play system going on. Starting on a lower temperature plate and then moving it to a hotter one, he slow cooks each okonomiyaki for a full 20 minutes to achieve that perfect fluffy texture. You can tell that each okonomiyaki is made with love and care, which makes the restaurant so popular. [Music] [Music] These fluffy eggs with pork are known as toeaki. Another signature dish on their menu right next to the okonomiyaki. [Music] Got it. I’m going to go [Music] [Music] [Music] We are not M looks incredible. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. [Music] The aroma was just too tempting. I had to try some. The owner recommended their special lunch, the melty cheese and pork okonomiyaki. Eating with this tan spatula is a tradition passed down from his grandpa. Oh man, I could really go for a beer right now, but I got to keep shooting. I wouldn’t stop you putting in on rice. With the lunch crowd satisfied, the owner heads out to check on his other stores. The lunch service is finished. [Music] Time to clean up and get ready for the dinner rush. Looks like they’ve got a big group coming in tonight and need to rearrange the tables. [Music] Dinner preparation is underway, even without the owner found the staff are super efficient. The owner’s back from his rounds just in time for the dinner crowd. He is literally a busy bee. And just like that, the customers start pouring in and the kitchen is now in full operation. [Music] [Music] Happy holiday. Yeah. I [Music] like signature fluffy okonomiyaki is a major hit with The ladies. [Music] [Laughter] Come on. Byebye. [Music] [Music] Y This okonomiyaki with noodles on top is called modern yaki. Back in the day, it was considered a kind of new thing in Osaka. Now, it’s a classic all over [Music] Japan. Speech. Speech. [Music] [Music] Speech. Fore! Foreign! Foreign! [Music] The aroma got me again. For dinner, I went for their yaki soba. This popular original dish features curry flavored fried noodles mixed with egg. The fresh noodles are so chewy and absolutely amazing. Oh my god. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Big cheers to the Naoya crew. Thanks for the delicious day. [Music] So, what did you think of the backstage pass to Naoya, the funniest okonomyaki restaurant in Osaka? The owner’s warm and passionate personality really shine through, making the whole place so energetic and fun. I had a blast shooting here. A big thanks to the amazing Naasan.
