Food tour in Kyoto, Japan! A gourmet guide to 12 foods to eat on your trip to Kyoto

This time we will be bringing you from Kyoto, one of Japan’s leading tourist destinations. While I was sightseeing a bit, I also sampled some of Kyoto’s gourmet food. Please enjoy this time until the end. good morning. Today we start from Fushimi Inari Station! Since I woke up a little early, I decided to go to Fushimi Inari Taisha. Before that, let’s have breakfast at a restaurant on the approach. I came to “Restaurant Inafuku”. Enjoy warm udon noodles at the restaurant. I ordered “Inari Udon” (950 yen). It’s here♪ Just looking at it makes me hungry. The triangular fried rice inside udon is also called “kitsune.” Therefore, since Fushimi Inari is famous for its foxes, I chose “Kitsune Udon”. Ah, it’s delicious…it’s a soothing and gentle flavor. Enjoy the udon while it’s still hot. Yes, it’s smooth and chewy and delicious♪ The steam does a good job of whetting your appetite again. Eating something warm in the morning gives me energy. The sweet dashi soup is also soaked in and your chopsticks will move faster and faster. Of course, the fried rice is plump and juicy♪ It’s thick and satisfying to eat. In addition to fried food, there are many other ingredients such as chicken and kamaboko. It’s best to break the soft-boiled egg at the end and mix it with the udon noodles. By the way, “Kitsune Udon” is a lucky charm at Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Apparently there is also a non-sweet type of “Kitsune Udon” that has chopped fried chicken in it. It seems that chopped fried chicken is more popular among people in Kyoto. I’d like to try that next time too. Thank you for the meal! It was a good way to eat up your stomach before walking around. Now, I’m going to eat at some more restaurants on the approach. At Hanaya Honten, you can buy “Inarizushi” starting from a single piece (150 yen). So, I bought one. It’s wrapped in plastic wrap, so it’s easy to eat with one hand even while standing. Yes, it’s delicious♪ The black sesame is a nice accent. Refreshing vinegared rice is also good in the morning. It went perfectly with the sweet fried rice. So, I finished it in no time. Thank you for the meal! . There’s only one more, and this is also lined up in the store. This is also a specialty of Fushimi Inari. I will have the sparrow yakitori (500 yen). Is it since I ate sparrow at Nishiki Market before? As you can see, it’s roasted whole. The sparrows themselves are apparently ordered from hunters all over the country. Enjoy the grilled sparrow. It’s in the same category as regular yakitori. It has an impact because it is roasted whole. Well then, I’ll take a bite. I’m not sure where to stop with this… In the end, it’s just the head part. I can’t tell it’s a sparrow anymore. It’s quite fragrant and the sauce is rich. After all, I don’t have much body. By the way, the origin of sparrow yakitori seems to date back to the Edo period. It is said that they originally started catching them to eat up grain and repel sparrows. This is also said to be a lucky charm. Thank you for the meal. So why are sparrows sold at Fushimi Inari? There is a theory that Fushimi Inari is dedicated to the god of abundant harvest. In the past, it was sold at food stalls in Tokyo as well. This is the main shrine of the Inari shrines, which are said to have more than 30,000 shrines nationwide. I’m thinking of doing some sightseeing. The fox enshrined here is said to be a messenger of the gods. In its mouth, it holds keys, treasures, scrolls, etc. related to rich harvests. It was founded in 711. In fact, it is a shrine with a history of over 1300 years. Still, it feels nostalgic…how many years has it been? The highlight of Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine is the “Senbon Torii”. This is a sight that makes me feel strange no matter how many times I see it. There are said to be over 10,000 torii gates, so I think it’s okay to call it “10,000 torii gates”. Torii gates began to be built after the Edo period. It is said that people started offering it as a token of gratitude because it meant that their wishes would come true. The number of torii gates continues to increase. The dedication fee for the smallest torii is 210,000 yen, and the largest one costs more than 1.6 million yen. After walking for about 10 minutes, we arrived at the Okusha worship place. This is the famous “Omokaru Stone”. Lift it while imagining its weight. It is said that if you lift a stone after making a wish and the stone is lighter than expected, it will come true. Well, my results are… Stunning! It was lighter than I expected♪ I carefully imagined something so heavy that I couldn’t lift it lol. Furthermore, I’ve had it before, so I don’t know if it’s beneficial. And since we’re here, we’ll also draw a fortune. Oh, it’s a number that’s related to me. Well, I think that even if the result is bad, it will be a good story. Huh! ? this is···. “Yu nochi Daikichi” This is the first time I’ve ever had a fortune book that was so detailed… There is a way to write it like this…Is it okay to say that the current result is “bad”? However, “Daikichi” is at its peak now and will only decline later. For that reason, there seems to be a belief that “Kyou” is better. Let’s hope that things will improve from now on. The precincts are extremely large, and it would take nearly two hours to walk around them. So today I’m going to go a little further and return home. The surroundings look like this, and I feel like I’m doing a light mountain climbing. I plan to come again soon. I reached the goal just before the place called “Mitsutsuji”! Now, I’m heading back to Kyoto Station, but before that I’ll take a short detour. I came to a store called Hogyokudo. This shop sells rice crackers called “Inari Senbei” that are made with white miso and white sesame. The specialty is “Kitsune Senbei” shaped like a fox. I will introduce this as a souvenir at the end. He let me taste Inari rice crackers♪ It’s delicious with a gentle sweetness. I want you to relax at home. I returned to Kyoto from Fushimi Inari Station via Tofukuji Temple. Well, after I finish my work, I’m going to go eat some food again from lunch. For lunch, I left Kyoto Station and came to the Karasuma area. The first place I entered was “Yumedokoro Fisherman’s Meshi Zoya”. Pass through the atmospheric entrance and head to the counter seats. What you’re looking for is “luxury food.” I ordered the most luxurious dish, “Maji!!! Luxury Meshi” (1,600 yen). As shown in this picture, it comes out in one plate. I’ve been waiting ♪ It’s so gorgeous. A luxurious formation with a bowl full of fresh fish in the center and six types of side dishes surrounding it. By the way, “Maji!!! Luxury Meshi” seems to have three types of fresh fish on top of the “Fisherman Meshi” in the middle. Even regular “luxury meals” come with seafood bowls and side dishes. Pour soy sauce over the eggs and serve in a bowl. This must be delicious… This is difficult to eat without breaking it down. So, let’s take a quick bite… Ah, this is super delicious♪ Finely cut fish goes perfectly with shiso leaves and takuan. This will make your mouth happy. The three types of fresh fish that cost 1,600 yen were “scallops,” “loose crab meat,” and “horse mackerel.” However, I think you can be satisfied with ordinary “luxury rice”. I envy the locals who can eat this on a regular basis. And, as they are confident in their fish, other dishes besides the seafood bowl are also quite delicious. The fried horse mackerel is crispy♪ I’m also happy that there are so many delicious side dishes. The thing that surprised me the most was this tofu. It’s called “Kitayama Koitofu,” and it’s sticky and rich, and goes perfectly with salt. According to the shop owner, this is the best tofu in Kyoto. On the other hand, there is also the “safe salad” and the unbranded “chawanmushi.” I guess I could write something without being so honest lol. Salads are also delicious. Together with obanzai, it makes up for the lack of vegetables. Of course, the chawanmushi is also delicious♪ Eating it for lunch is a luxury. In the end, everything is delicious. I ate it non-stop. Well, I’m about to finish eating… There’s a treat waiting for you at the end, so let’s enjoy that too. There’s nothing more I can say about this… Well then, let’s have it. Ah…my whole body is relaxing… You can eat as much Ochazuke as you want. Plenty of dashi soup is poured over it. I think it’s OK to add a little rice. What’s more, they also add fillets of sea bream♪ This is also delicious. However, there were many people around me wearing suits, which is tough for businessmen. If you eat this, you won’t feel like working in the afternoon. If it’s Friday, I’ll probably be able to do my best if I have half a day left. I ate it all up slowly. Thank you for the delicious lunch, which was great in terms of taste and cost performance. At this restaurant, you don’t have to have a menu at night, just choose your fish and have your favorite dish made. There are various affiliated stores that look interesting, so I’d like to come back again. Well, I’m the same person who doesn’t feel like working. So let’s postpone reality a little longer. The next place we came to was “Izuju” near Yasaka Shrine. This is a long-established sushi restaurant that has been in business for over 100 years. The specialty of this restaurant is “saba sushi.” This time, I ordered “Mackerel/Aji”, the second one from the left (1775 yen). Additionally, I ordered Kamibakko Sushi (1836 yen). The store has a long and narrow space in the back. The atmosphere is good and the hustle and bustle is calm. It seems that the dishes displayed on the wall are Imari ware plates. Arrived♪ It’s so beautiful that it’s a waste to eat it. This is the famous mackerel sushi, and the one to the right is aji sushi. The boxed sushi is so beautiful that it’s almost a waste to eat it. It’s quite heavy when you hold it with chopsticks, so it seems like it’s worth eating. It is said that the rolled kelp can be removed and eaten. This is amazing… I’ll take it! It’s beautiful no matter where you look at it. Wow, this is delicious… Needless to say, it’s thick. It’s moist and has a great amount of fat when you bite into it. Still, it’s not persistent at all. This is my first time having such delicious mackerel sushi. We will also have horse mackerel sushi. This one is also large. It seems that Shimaji is used to sandwich the perilla leaves. It’s firm and delicious, I love Shimaji. This is amazing, and it’s quite voluminous. On the other hand, I was surprised when the bowl was brought to me because it was quite large. Then let’s eat some boxed sushi. This is thick fried egg and conger eel. The sweetness of the eggs and conger eel and the sourness of the vinegared rice gradually spread through the dish. It has a very elegant taste. The shrimp and sea bream were also delicious. “Izushige also seems to have delicious Inarizushi, so I’d like to try that as well. I’m curious about how delicious the inari sushi I usually buy is. We enjoyed the specialties of a long-established store that has been in business for over 100 years. You can take the sushi home and make it a good souvenir. Now, there’s one more shop, the next one is the one right next door. I forgot to take a picture of the store’s signboard, but I came to Shizuya Gion store. A bakery founded in 1945. I wanted to eat this “Kyo Karune”. I heard that it is the soul food of Kyoto people, so I was curious about it. There seem to be several types, but this time I bought the standard “Carnet” (200 yen). Eat-in is also OK, so I decided to eat there. There was also a bread called “New Bird” that I had eaten last time. I also purchased “Kyoto Taiko Anpan”. Contains white bean paste with organic Uji matcha and domestically produced red beans (270 yen). I paid the bill and went to my seat with an iced cafe latte. The “carne” was warm. Well then, let’s eat. Oh, it’s much more delicious than I imagined! “Carnet” is chewy French bread sandwiched with boneless ham and onion slices. I thought it would have a lighter taste, but it was much more filling than I imagined. The salty taste of margarine is exquisite and goes perfectly with the ingredients. The ham and onion have a nice texture and an addictive taste. We will also have anpan (red bean paste). Fluffy bread. It’s quite large and feels heavy. Plenty of red bean paste♪ It’s a beautiful green color, as you might expect from Uji Matcha. It has a surprisingly gentle sweetness and is easy to eat. It goes perfectly with a cafe latte with plenty of milk. I’m holding onto happiness with both hands. This place is open from 8am, so it’s perfect for a morning meal. It might be a good idea to stop by on your way back from visiting nearby Kiyomizu Temple or Yasaka Shrine. I was able to quickly enjoy local gourmet food. Ah, it was delicious…Thank you for the meal! The next store is also nearby. Lastly, we will have sweets. I came to Kagizen Yoshibo Shijo Main Branch. This Japanese sweets shop was founded around 1700 and has a history of about 300 years. The shop’s specialty is “Kuzukiri”. I was told that I could choose between brown sugar syrup and white sugar syrup, so I chose brown sugar syrup (1,100 yen). But I’m also curious about the white honey, I thought to myself as I waited. A great device has arrived. Is this all trash? Should I open this? This is black honey. It’s fun to be excited by the look. Oh, this is beautiful. Dip Kuzukiri in brown sugar syrup. It’s chilly outside, but you look cool. Well then, let’s eat. This is of course my first time eating Kuzukiri this way. This is also delicious ~ it’s the best that goes down your throat ♪ It has a very delicate taste. It has a good texture and the brown sugar syrup is delicious. Moreover, there are quite a lot of Kuzukiri. I didn’t know it at first, but there was a lot of it at the bottom. Even so, it is common to find stores that have been in business for over 100 years… In Kyoto, some people say that the Onin War (1467-1477) is a recent event. Apparently, a store cannot be called a long-established store after 100 or 200 years, and I was reminded of the depth of Kyoto’s history. A shop that existed long before I was born continues to weave its history for 400 or 500 years even after I die. I wish that was the case, especially in this day and age. The 150-year-old bento shop in front of Kabukiza in Tokyo has also closed. However, depending on the development of technology, we may become immortal or even the concept of death may change. We might easily see the 400th anniversary of our founding lol. I took a short walk along the Kamogawa River, fantasizing about the future. Anyway, there are many kinds of birds in Kamogawa. This dignified appearance makes me feel like the master of this river Oh, it flew away. Just then, I found myself staring at the flow of a river in a mysterious place. There’s a fine bearded owner over there too. After taking a walk like that, I returned to the hotel and worked until night. Well, the night starts from the area called Gion Shinbashi. This place is also quite close to Yasaka Shrine. First, we went to a shop in an alley along the Shirakawa River. The first place I came to was “Gion Tanto”. It’s a nice and relaxing atmosphere. This is a restaurant where you can eat okonomiyaki and teppanyaki. Of course, we ordered sake as well. Along with beer (700 yen). First, let’s have a toast with the restaurant’s popular menu, Tonpeiyaki (830 yen). I’m already satisfied with this visual alone♪ I’ll enjoy having this. I can’t resist a drink at night… Tonpeiyaki is also delicious. The eggs are creamy and the pork is plentiful, making it very filling. Once mixed with the fragrant and sweet sauce, you can eat as much as you want. The refreshing feeling of eating something rich and drinking beer is the best. Ah, it’s delicious… The restaurant’s specialty, the mud sauce, is also delicious♪ It’s rich and not as spicy as I expected, making it even more delicious. I think it’s time to order the main dish. Before entering the restaurant, I felt like eating okonomiyaki. However, when I looked at the menu, I really wanted to eat yakisoba, so I went for that this time. Fried udon and sobameshi are also popular. Everything starts to look delicious. The Shirakawa river flowing outside the window also has a nice atmosphere. It would be nice to drink beer here in the summer. The window was open, but the heater was on, and they lent me a blanket, so I wasn’t cold at all. And now comes the long-awaited main dish! There are few sounds that whet your appetite like this. Yakisoba is a mix of pork, squid, and shrimp topped with a fried egg (1,400 yen). Super delicious… Being able to eat directly from the iron plate in front of you is a unique pleasure found in restaurants. And beer goes great too. It also breaks up the fried eggs. If you mix yakisoba with eggs, you can eat it endlessly. I didn’t eat okonomiyaki today. You don’t have to put too much effort into a restaurant like this, and it’s perfect for relaxing by yourself. Kyoto is a student town and there are many affordable restaurants, so I’d like to continue to try out different types of food. Finally, we will eat ramen at a nearby restaurant. I came to “Mendokoro Muraji Gion Main Branch”. The entrance doesn’t look like a ramen shop. There are seats lined up at the top of the stairs. I had actually been here before, and I was curious about the Lemon Ramen, so I ordered it. However, this time I ordered “Sake Kasu Ramen” (1130 yen). Apparently they use sake from Sasaki Sake Brewery in Kyoto. The colors are so bright. There are plenty of vegetables on top of the cloudy soup. It would be delicious with this soup. What does sake lees soup taste like? Oh, it’s easier to drink than I expected. It’s rich and tastes like sake lees, but the flavor of the chicken paitan makes it less addictive. Steam rises when you lift the noodles. The thin noodles come in easily and are easy to eat. The soup is rich and goes well with the noodles. This is fried “Hirano Tofu”. It absorbs the soup well and is juicy♪ The menu also included chicken paitan ramen and tsukemen. There is also a rice menu, so it looks good when you want to eat a lot. There are various types of alcohol as well. The toppings are unique, and this may be the first time I’ve eaten such a large carrot in ramen. Ah, it was delicious… After all, the only way to end your meal is with ramen. Phew, I’m very satisfied. Well, now all I have to do is go home and sleep. Actually, there is one more thing I would like to take out before heading back to the hotel. We are currently waiting for it to be completed at a shop near Minamiza and Kamogawa. And this is what I got. What’s inside? I’ll open it at my inn. I’ll try untying the string right away. What’s inside is tightly wrapped… Mitarashi dango with plenty of soybean flour. I received 3 mitarashi dango for 120 yen each. There are 4 small and cute dumplings stuck in it. I’ll have it right away♪ Yes, it’s delicious♪ It’s freshly baked, so it’s fragrant. It’s my first time to eat soybean flour and mitarashi bean paste together, but the taste is sweet and salty and addictive. By the way, the name of the shop where I bought this dango is “Miyoshiya.” Last time, I went to a ramen shop called “Sadakazu” that was only open for 3 hours in the evening. It seems like it’s even shorter here, lasting only about 2 hours from around 8:00pm or 9:00pm. There are irregular holidays and business hours vary depending on the day. Photography of the store is prohibited. I’ve wanted to go there several times, and this time I finally got around to it. It was a shop that I was interested in because of its strange business hours. It may be difficult for tourists to visit, but if you are interested, please check it out. Thank you very much for watching till the end this time. Now let’s go home and eat some souvenirs. Kyoto Gourmet TourComplete. Souvenirs. Now, this time I came to Porta located in the underground shopping mall of Kyoto Station. This store called “Kyo Select” sells products from various brands. Among them, this chocolate called “DARI・K” caught my attention. Speaking of chocolate, Ghana is famous in Japan. However, “DARI・K” uses cacao from Indonesia. I heard that it was very delicious, so I decided to buy it. I bought two types of Langue de Chat. I’ll have it right away. Let’s start with the dark. I’m sorry that it broke while I was bringing it home. Yes, it’s delicious! The chocolate is thick and satisfying to eat. An adult flavor with just the right amount of bitterness and sourness. The other type has rich milk. Chocolate and goes well with cookies. This is delicious. I liked this one better. And the rice crackers I bought at Fushimi Inari. Is the fox mask big enough for a child to hide completely? It looks like it will be quite a lot if you eat it all. I tried putting it up to my face and trying to hide it from the camera, but it didn’t work at all lol. It looks dignified when you look at it like this. Yeah, it’s delicious. The ingredients are the same as Inari rice crackers, so the taste is the same. The bell-shaped rice crackers also contain fortune telling fortunes. Oh “Nakayoshi”… your fortune is steadily improving. It’s a fun snack with a little bit of fun. Come to think of it, the wish for the “Omokaru Stone” hasn’t come true yet… Please also see the next video!

  1. Since I lived in an apartment across from Shichijo-eki on the Kamagawa, I often went on the Keihan Line to Fushimi Inari. However, I was never brave enough to try suzume-yaki. You were so brave to just bite into the little bird from the top! This was, of course, my favorite video, taking in all my old home territory. Thanks, so much!
