Walking Tokyo’s Retro Side🌷Nezu Tokyo Slow Travel vlog 2025 (Sub)

Nezu, Tokyo In this season when azaleas are in full bloom, we took a casual stroll through this town filled with a Showa-era vibe. Just wandering around freely. Oh wow! That’s a cool building. We’re heading now to Nezu Shrine’s Azalea Festival. It’s super crowded! Whoa! It’s incredibly beautiful. So pretty. And in full bloom! Isn’t this just perfect timing? I didn’t know there were so many kinds of azaleas. I’ve never looked this closely before. Yeah, same here. And they’re all carefully pruned into round shapes. Azaleas usually remind me of roadside flower beds, but these are nothing like the ones I know! Every April, Nezu Shrine hosts the Bunkyo Azalea Festival. Around 100 types and 3,000 azalea bushes bloom across the grounds, filling spring with vivid color. Did you know? These azaleas weren’t actually planted for the shrine! Huh? Really? They were originally planted on the estate of the Tokugawa family. Then later, the shrine moved here from Sendagi. So the azaleas came first? Yeah. That’s amazing! The current site of Nezu Shrine was once the estate of Tokugawa Tsunashige. Kirishima azaleas had already been planted in his garden, and it became known as “Azalea Hill,” a famous spot in Edo. This density is way more than your average azaleas. They’re totally packed together! Ooh, yakitori! Nice! So many delicious-looking shops. Yeah, totally. It feels like a mix of old and new stores. It’s past lunchtime. Want to take a break? Let’s take a break. MIYANO-YU is a cafe inside a renovated 70-year-old public bathhouse. They’ve kept original features like the bathtub and shoe lockers, creating a truly unique atmosphere. Look! This is one of those bathhouse locker tags… They use them for waiting now! That’s so fun. This used to be a sento, right? Looks like they renovated the whole thing into a cafe. Such a cool space. It really feels like a hidden gem. We just stumbled upon it by chance. Amazing, isn’t it? The chimney from the old bathhouse is still standing outside. Still there? Yep. Oh! That’s good. It’s not sweet. They used soy milk and matcha— Really tasty. I got the matcha lemon soda. That sounds… controversial. But I think it’s gonna be good. It turns light green when you mix it. How is it? Huh? I don’t taste the matcha at all. Seriously!? Maybe it’s not fully mixed? Yeah, not mixed enough. Also, I was the one who ordered it! But hey, as a lemon soda, it’s really good. Super tasty. Very refreshing. I really like this flavor. Me too. It’s not syrupy— you can tell it’s made with real lemon. Delicious! Every view here feels somehow nostalgic. I can’t believe this much has been preserved. Feels like a cute little shop. Like we suddenly time-traveled. Yeah, totally. What a cute store. They sell rice balls and ochazuke. So cute! They’re drinking water by hand. Can I take a photo? (Sure.) Look at them drink. Maru-chan. That’s their name? Maru-chan? Drinking water with their hands. Their face won’t reach the water. (It won’t reach.) Yeah, their face can’t reach the water. That’s adorable. Gelato, made just for you! Even in the evening it’s still hot today. How about some ice cream? Yes! Let’s get ice cream! Let’s do it. Here it is. SLOW GELATO. SLOW GELATO is known for its “mix-later” style— homemade sauces and toppings added after you order. You can customize your order in over 150 ways. First, you choose milk or chocolate… Milk, maybe? Yeah, milk sounds good. Okay, let’s go with milk. Now the sauce… Caramel, Strawberry, Lemon, Hojicha, Peanut, Blood orange… Maybe strawberry? The chunky strawberry one. They also have hojicha. Peanut sounds good too. I think I’ll go with chunky strawberry. Strawberry and… Sprinkles—nuts! Do they go together? I think so! Salted caramel’s tempting too. Right? Let’s go with salted caramel. Skip the strawberry… I wonder what it’ll taste like. Yeah! It’s super good! Feels kind of grown-up. So good. The salted caramel tastes like flan caramel. It said “mix-later gelato,” but do we mix it? Nope. I think they mix it for you in the back. Ah, got it. Normally with gelato, if it’s nuts, it’s just nuts, or pistachio is just pistachio, and they scoop and top it. But here, they mix your toppings into the milk or chocolate base. That makes sense. Delicious! The waffle cone is amazing. The feeling of the old days still lingers in the air here. It’s like the town itself gently says, “Welcome home.” This turned out to be a journey full of warmth and nostalgia.
