I took the Limited Express Lilac from Sapporo to Asahikawa, a comfortable 1.5-hour train ride.
Tickets were reserved online and printed at a vending machine on the day of departure.
If you have a Japan Rail Pass, you can use it for this route and save money.

Please note: The penguin walk at Asahiyama Zoo is held only in winter when there’s snow on the ground.
Check the zoo’s official website for schedule details and seasonal updates.
It was snowing heavily when I visited, making the whole experience even more special!
