仙台市杜の都・緑の名所100選としても知られる、宮城県仙台市青葉区にある浄土宗 西方寺と五重塔は、一般には定義如来や定義山と呼ばれています。平貞能（たいらのさだよし）が壇ノ浦の戦いの後に隠れ住み、名前を「貞能」から「定義」と改名し、音読みで「じょうぎ」となったそうです。宮城県では、定義を「じょうぎ」と仙台弁の発音特性からの「じょうげ」と二通りの言い方があります。縁結びや安産のご利益、名物の油揚げなどもあり、家族旅行やカップルのデートコースとしても人気で、四季の移り変わりで様々な表情を見せる風景も見どころの一つです。
