The Small Shrine Where Cherry Blossoms Bloom, Sugawara Shrine – Innoshima, Hiroshima #shorts
The area around Innoshima Island used to be a major shipping route in the Seto Inland Sea. Therefore, the pirate Murakami Suigun (navy) boasted great power with this island as one of its bases. After Hideyoshi Toyotomi issued a decree in 1588 to stop piracy, the Murakami clan lost power, and salt production and shipping became prosperous. Even today, this island is deeply connected with the sea, and shipbuilding is one of the main industries on the island.
Sugawara Shrine stands on the ruins of a former castle of the Miyachi clan, a member of the pirate Murakami Suigun (navy). A large camphor tree, said to have been planted in 901 in commemoration of a stopover by Sugawara Michizane, stands in the precincts of the shrine. Sugawara Michizane was a scholar, poet, and politician who is now revered as a god of learning.
