Two international music giants had announcements from Japan in recent days. Live Nation has acquired Hayashi International Promotions, one of the big live-music promoters in Japan.

Current HIP CEO Kaori Hayashi will oversee the combined businesses in Japan, and said the focus is “giving Japanese artists the opportunity to perform to new audiences and strengthening Japan’s position as a must-visit destination for major acts”.

The other announcement came from Apple Music, which has opened a new studio in Tokyo. It will be used to produce radio shows for Apple Music’s service, but also for artists’ live sessions, documentaries and interviews.

One of the new radio shows is ‘Snow World Radio’, hosted by members of Japanese idol group Snow Man. Again, global expansion is part of the thinking behind this move.

“Japan has an incredibly vibrant and flourishing music community and we see so much of that growth reflected on our platform as listeners all around the world discover these artists and fall in love with their music,” said Apple Music’s global head of content and editorial Rachel Newman.
