According to the Asahi Shimbun and other foreign media, Arakurayama Sengen Park in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, announced that it would collect admission fees to solve the problem of excessive tourism.

A park official said, “The sudden increase in tourists has caused garbage to be scattered in the park and the bathroom is a mess,” adding, “The exact amount has not yet been determined, but we will soon collect admission fees to solve the problem of excessive tourism.”

Along with collecting admission fees, Arakurayama Sengen Park is considering installing additional convenience facilities. A park official said, “We have received many complaints that the 398 stairs leading to the observation deck in the park are too steep and narrow for the elderly or disabled to climb,” adding, “We will improve the inconvenience by installing elevators or escalators.”

Arakurayama Sengen Park, located in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, is famous for its panoramic view of Mount Fuji. Recently, as demand for travel to Japan has increased significantly due to the low yen, the number of people visiting Arakurayama Sengen Park, a free tourist destination, is increasing rapidly.

Recently, various movements have been made to solve overtourism (tourism pollution) throughout Japan. Last month, Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture installed a screen on the “Bridge of Dreams,” famous for Mt. Fuji’s photo zone. In addition, Fujikawa Gucho in Yamanashi Prefecture, located at the foot of Mount Fuji, will collect accommodation taxes for tourists from early 2026.
