Mussels, or murasakiigai, are for sale at the Tomato-Atsuma thermal power station in the town of Atsuma, Hokkaido. Many mussels cling to the channel in the power station where sea water flows. They used to be thrown out, but the power plant operator started selling them to a local fishers’ cooperative from two years ago. Now, they are a specialty of the power plant.
