An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 struck Nagano Prefecture in central Japan on Friday, with no tsunami warning issued, according to the weather agency.

The 8:19 p.m. quake measured a lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7, jolting northern and central parts of the prefecture, the agency said. It occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.

The city of Omachi and nearby villages were among those that experienced the tremor most. Omachi serves as the Nagano-side gateway to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a scenic mountain crossing that stretches from there to the town of Tateyama in Toyama Prefecture.

Under lower 5 seismic intensity, people may feel they want to hold onto things and dishes may fall from shelves, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
