(Mainichi/Kan Takeuchi)

The city of Tendo in Yamagata Prefecture makes the most shogi pieces in Japan. There, on April 12 and 13, “human shogi” matches were played on a large board, in which people dressed as warriors in armor and battle helmets participated as pieces. Local high school students played the role of the pieces. Professional shogi players had exciting matches using warrior-style speech.
