TOKYO (Kyodo) — Sections of the Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines will be suspended in Tokyo this weekend due to construction work, according to JR East.
The railway operator said in December it will halt services between Ueno and Osaki stations on the outer loop of the Yamanote Line and between Higashi-Jujo and Shinagawa on the Kehin-Tohoku Line, from the first train on Saturday to around noon Sunday.
JR East will also suspend services between Osaki and Ueno on the inner loop of the Yamanote Line from the first train to around noon on Sunday.
The number of trains running on other sections of the major commuter lines will be reduced by up to 60 percent of normal operations. Passengers will be able to take trains run by other companies at no extra cost to circumnavigate the route providing they have a ticket or pass covering the suspended sections, JR East said.
The cause of the suspensions is construction work to expand the platforms at Tamachi Station and install new tracks close to the station that will be used for a new route, set to open in fiscal 2031, connecting Haneda airport and downtown Tokyo.
