AUSTIN, Texas — Japan’s leading semiconductor company officially cut the ribbon and opened a new headquarters in Austin’s River South today.
Tokyo Electron LTD does about 13 billion dollars in business a year, and it’s the fourth largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world.
Wednesday morning’s event was attended by Tokyo Electron executives, the Texas Secretary of State, and even the vice president of Samsung. The Korean company is currently building a semiconductor manufacturing plant of its own in Taylor.

This comes amidst the Trump administration’s trade war, which includes tariffs on imports from Japan. The president of TEL Manufacturing here in America, Mark Dougherty, says it doesn’t really affect them since the company has multiple manufacturing sites around the country, along with the Austin headquarters. He says plans to expand have been in the works for about three years.
“From a talent attraction and brand recognition image standpoint, it was just a great time for us to move closer to downtown, have an opportunity to be a part of the skyline, and as a Japanese company, we are still working on people know who we are, so having the advantage of that nice TEL logo on top of building is a great cherry on top,” he said.
This new headquarters replaces the old headquarters that served the company for 25 years. Tokyo Electron also has a training and technology facility closer to ABIA that will open in a few months, so there’s lots of expansion ahead
