Dazaifu’s an easy day trip not far from Fukuoka, for a taste of traditional Japan, as well as Kyushu National Museum.

Dazaifu’s a historic town about half an hour from Fukuoka on the train, so it makes a perfect day trip. We used a northern Kyushu regional rail pass for this trip, but you can also get special day tickets from Nishitetsu Railways. You can also visit Yanagawa in the same day if you want to – it’s known as the Venice of Japan. The main attraction in Dazaifu is Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, which is close to the station. There’s a quaint shopping street running up to the temple, with street food and souvenir shops – including a cute Sumikko Gurashi shop! I tried the local speciality: umegae mochi, which is printed with plum blossoms, a symbol of Dazaifu. There are also lots of plum blossoms at the shrine in February. We also saw historic swords, artefacts and artwork at Kyushu National Museum, which is very close by – a must-visit if you like Japanese history. Then we headed back to Fukuoka for the evening and hit the arcades at Canal City mall.
