Here are the highlights and not-to-miss events from the upcoming ProWine Tokyo scheduled for April 15-17.

Anticipation is building as ProWine Tokyo 2025, Japan’s leading international wine and spirits trade fair, prepares to open its doors from April 15–17 at Tokyo Big Sight. Organised by Messe Düsseldorf Japan Co., Ltd., the event is expected to draw more than 190 exhibitors from 21 countries, reinforcing its position as a critical business platform for wine and spirits professionals across Asia.

Now in its second edition, ProWine Tokyo is the youngest addition to the globally recognised ProWein family—the world’s largest wine and spirits trade fair network. The show offers a rare opportunity for producers, importers, wholesalers, hospitality operators and retailers to meet under one roof and engage directly with Japan’s discerning and steadily growing wine and spirits market.

Despite broader declines in national alcohol consumption, Japan’s wine sector continues to expand, driven by a rise in premium wine imports, strong consumer interest in Champagne and sparkling wines, and a deepening appreciation for high-quality products. Tokyo, home to the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants globally, remains a key gateway for international brands targeting a market that prioritises craftsmanship, provenance and taste.

International Reach, Local Relevance

The event will spotlight a diverse lineup of exhibitors, including returning pavilions from France, Germany, Spain and Portugal, and debut appearances by Serbia and Georgia, broadening the representation of Old World wines. Producers from emerging markets such as China, Mexico, and New York will also present their latest offerings, reflecting a global industry in motion.

In a nod to local tradition, the fair will feature a dedicated sake and shochu section in partnership with the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association, bridging global innovation with Japan’s own rich beverage heritage.

Education, Innovation and Industry Insight

A standout feature of ProWine Tokyo 2025 will be its robust programme of over 30 seminars and masterclasses, addressing pressing industry topics such as climate change, sustainability, shifting consumption habits, and future market trends. These sessions are designed to provide actionable insights while appealing to Japan’s relatively small—but growing—wine-drinking population.

Key seminars include:

“Champagne Special Releases and Sustainability” led by Patrick Schmitt MW, alongside a comparative tasting of global sparkling wines.

A spotlight on Yamagata GI wines, recognising the prefecture’s emergence as a premium domestic wine region.

A deep dive into the sustainability practices of Schloss Johannisberg, one of Germany’s most historic estates.

The show will also feature Sommelier AI, a new tool designed to assist small-scale restaurants in curating wine lists, and interactive tasting zones featuring grape varieties reimagined as manga characters—an engaging concept aimed at demystifying lesser-known grapes for Japanese audiences.

Awards and Recognition

To celebrate creativity and excellence in the industry, ProWine Tokyo will host several awards, including the Wine Label Design Contest, the newly launched Tokyo Italian Sommelier Award, and the Star Wine List of the Year Japan. The latter will be judged by acclaimed sommeliers Toru Takamatsu MS and Reeze Choi, highlighting the importance of wine service in Japan’s high-end dining scene.
