The University of Tokyo will launch its first new faculty in 70 years in the fall of 2027.
It will offer an integrated bachelor’s and master’s five-year program taught entirely in English. The university aims to draw excellent students from Japan and abroad to enhance its international competitiveness.
The university has unveiled a plan to open the UTokyo College of Design in September, 2027, at its Hongo Campus in Tokyo.
The program is aimed at cultivating leaders who will contribute to solving social challenges that the world is facing.
The university will have its first foreign national dean to head the faculty. It expects half of the students in the program will be international students.
Students will be required to study off campus for up to a year, in programs including internships at companies and studying abroad.
It plans to administer a different format of entrance exam from the current written tests.
The faculty’s academic year starts in September as opposed to April at all other faculties.
It is the first new faculty since the establishment of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1958.
The university aims to increase the ratio of international students in the undergraduate school to 30 percent and to more than 40 percent in graduate school by 2049.
University President Fujii Teruo said one discipline of study alone cannot solve the challenges facing human society. He said the university will invite more students from different parts of the world to study here and work to meet emerging needs in academic programs.
