Exploring Ashiya known to have Japan’s Beverly Hills, the most luxurious residential area in Hyogo.

After parting ways with my great friend Marty who gave me a deeper tour of Kobe, I continued exploring on my own. My next destination was the Ashiya city located next to Kobe City. Remarkably, Ashiya is known for having Japan’s most exclusive residential area. Then there’s the private residence (now a museum) of fashion designer Hiroko Koshino, known as a work of architect Tadao Ando, which I learned further about when visiting the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art which was also designed by him. I’d like to explore both from the perspective of “housing” as it embodies the character of the city. Let’s explore 🙂

  1. I really found the art museum to be architecturally interesting. The dichotomy of gray concrete walls and the colorful paintings really is striking. I have seen similar large concrete block walls in Japanese buildings. Do you know what the purpose of the four holes in each concrete block is? I am assuming they have some functional purpose. The neighborhood that I live in also requires that changes to the exterior features of the homes be authorized by the homeowners' home architecture committee. Similarly, all electrical cables are buried. Very beautiful looking and well maintained homes. Thank you for sharing the wealth of the interesting information on your journey. Stay warm and safe, Rokusan. 😺🙂

  2. I think everything you show is incredible, it is surprisingly rich, congratulations.👏🏻
