A Day in KOBE (Kobe Beef Fail!) 🥩 Perfect day trip from Osaka, Japan

What we did in 1 day in Kobe, Japan, including Chinatown, Harbourland, Meriken Park and how we failed at trying Kobe beef.

Kobe’s such an easy day trip from Osaka, only 12 minutes on the bullet train. It’s much more chilled, with lots to do. Here’s how we spent a day in Kobe, including the Nunobiki ropeway and herb garden, Nunobiki waterfall hike, then taking the metro to Sannomiya for a walk through Chinatown, to the waterfront. It’s lovely walking by the sea, through Meriken Park and Harborland, where there’s the Maritime Museum, Kawasaki Good Times World, Mosaic shopping mall, boat cruises and lots of restaurants. We failed at trying Kobe beef – it’s definitely worth doing some research before you go to find somewhere that serves genuine wagyu beef.

  1. We visited Kobe a few years ago and found it extremely beautiful. Gorgeous modern architecture, lovely views of the lush nearby mountains, and such a beautiful waterfront. We also tried the Kobe wagyu which was incredibly delicious, but as you touched on in your video we didn't get the absolute highest grade because it was significantly more expensive. I would love to visit Kobe again – it charmed the heck out of us.

  2. I went to Steak Land for Kobe beef after seeing your recommendation. It was great value. There are nice Kobe beef places for Phil on ikuta road and the back alleys but they are VERY expensive.

  3. We did almost the same trip but from Tokyo
We had Kobe beef in one of those rests where they cook in front of you I think it was 100 quid each , expensive but tasted delicious

A great city and a great video to bring back memories

    Thanks Amy

  4. Thanks for the great video, Amy. It's just in time too, I'll be in Kobe in just over a month. I'll get working on my Kobe beef restaurant homework before I go.

  5. I did nearly 3 day in Kobe in February. Really enjoyed it. The light symbols on the hill are a sailboat, an anchor and a Kobe symbol [not jellyfish].

  6. Aw Phil! What a sweet thing to say! Really lovely that he was willing to miss out on the meat so that you both could eat together!
And yes, Amy, I think you are correct. They should provide more vegetarian options at the beef/meat restaurants.

  7. i went to kobe last time i was there. so cool to see areas i went to. i liked the calm city and the icoca ic cards

  8. I think people get too hung up on "Kobe" when what they really want is A5. I've had a bunch of different brands/regions, and I'd say all the A5's I've had are equally amazing. I think Phil is right in that that steak was probably delicious wagyu but not A5. So my advice would be to look/research for A5, rather than worrying about whether it is Kobe or Miyazaki or whatever. And if you're staying somewhere with a kitchenette, try some grocery stores or butchers' too. A5 is easy to read!

  9. The next time I watch one of your videos we will be in Japan!! We fly out tomorrow – so excited. Your book and planning deck are packed 😊

  10. Ah Phil, you are such a gentleman. Good on ya mate, beautiful thing to say. Hopefully you will have more luck with the beef in Takayama. There is Hida beef in many places and not as expensive as Kobe. You can find a lot being grilled on the side of the road (in the old town) without having to go into any restaurants.

  11. Me and my wife had Wagyu beef at a small restaurant in Osaka last year. It was a few pieces of meat on a plate, with nothing else to go with it. Price was 4000 Yen each, which is pricey for the small amount we were served. The restaurant was on the other side of the canal some distance from Dotonbori. I assume they don't see many tourists in that area. The meat was delicious but not enough for an adult. We also had Wagyu beef in Kamakura, close to the station. It was a different type that we had to cook ourself at the table. It came with a lot of sides and vegetables, and the price was very affordable. This beef was even more delicious than the one we had in Osaka. Thank you for the video 🙂

  12. For first time travelers, I recommend Steakland Kobe, as they're very foreigner friendly and their lunch specials are very reasonably priced.
