Kagoshima Day 3: Exploring Sakurajima: Japan’s Active Volcano

Join me on an adventure to Sakurajima, the iconic active volcano in Kagoshima, Japan! This is my very first visit to this volcanic island, and the journey starts with a scenic ferry ride across Kinko Bay. Once on the island, I explore an ancient temple filled with history and serenity, and take a breathtaking lava walk along the rugged coastline, shaped by past eruptions. With stunning views of the volcano and the bay, Sakurajima offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. If you’re planning a trip to Kagoshima, this is a must-see destination!

  1. sakurajima reminds me of kona on the big island of hawaii where there is an active volcano also, some of the land is barren full of black lava rock. kilauea is erupting now n you can watch video by searching Kilauea volcano live

  2. I appreciate the fact that there are signs in Japanese and English. Sadly, I was educated solely in the States, so my Japanese is 下手 (heta): lacking skill/ability. However, are the staff bilingual? Or, does it depend on which business?

  3. Bravo, Shinichi. You really went out of your comfort zone on this video, and it looks like it was worth it! Too bad it was so "voggy". That's what we call it in Hawaii when the volcano is erupting and giving off a lot of smoke and steam and making the air look like smog.

  4. This was so interesting and very enjoyable scenery around the volcano. Finding that little gem in the back streets will be one to visit at night with Satoshi next time. ❤

  5. The minutes of silence on the lava walk were so peaceful and beautiful, Shinichi. Also, learning about the lava's effect on the landscape and how it recovered over time was interesting. Your talking kitty companion touched my heart–I wanted to snuggle her/him.😻 The back street gems you found will be fun to explore with Satoshi! Thank you for these videos.💙

  6. Lovely walk around that lava garden. It's kind of what I expect a Japanese garden to look like, with those weird formation rocks all around and the plants growing from them. The contrast between dead material and life is quite fascinating and give a 'zen' kind of vibe in my mind. And that cat was another surprise. What a sweet little animal. 🐈Thank you for another fine video!

  7. Just watched the rest. Yes, you definitely should go all the way around the volcano just to say that you did. There are a few observation points and a statue/art of Nagabuchi (singer from Kagoshima) at the location of a huge concert.

The run down area is just that… run down. Not typical of Kagoshima City. The area is called Meizanbori.

I'd have to look it up but I think it's a leftover from after WWII. I think they don't own the land but after the war it was "squatted on" so to speak. The government will probably just let it go on until it falls apart and then use the land because it's in a prime location. Mostly residential with a bunch of businesses but it's sooo old and rundown. I don't think any of the buildings are rebuild able so when they go that's it.

  8. That was a great day! Thanks for taking us along. The volcano is very cool. Nice little town. Quiet serene walk was perfect. Just what I needed as well. Take care. Look forward to the next walk 🤗

  9. When you’re anxious focus on what’s around you rather than internally. Focus on the views, the sounds, nature etc rather than how you feel. That’s what’s helped me with my anxiety and it’s something I’ve had to practice a lot over the last couple of years

  10. Thank you Shinichi, a fine walk and an interesting trip to the island, I look forward to seeing more of the area when you visit with Satoshi. I love how you just see something and take a detour, your curiosity is infectious 🙂 I enjoy doing that too.

  11. I like that you almost had the place to yourself. Good time to walk and reflect. Sometimes we need to embrace the silence. Thank you.

  12. 7:58 "See you later Kagoshima city" Fun fact – The Sakurajima volcano is actually part of Kagoshima city (yes city not just the prefecture). So people of Kagoshima city are literally living in the same city as one of the most active volcanoes in the world

  13. The kitty who followed you was beautiful, and I so much wanted to reach through my monitor and pet them. Your walk around the visitor center and the trails was so relaxing. It felt like I was actually there walking with you. Thank you. As another person in the comment said, I also would sit and watch Sakurajima for a while.
