Just in front of the Yokohama Landmark Tower (Japan’s tallest skyscraper) is the Yokohama Port Museum with a new and very good exhibition. Part of the museum is the former training ship – a four masted barque – the Nippon Maru. It is permanently moored in an old dock. It is a very beautiful tall mast ship that was decommissioned in 1984 and has been open to the public since 1985.
A few times during the summer volunteers make the ship come alive by setting all sails on the ship. It is definitely a spectacle and worth seeing.
The museum next to the ship contains a huge collection of model ships and very interesting history about Yokohama and its port.
The video contains stills and HD from 3 separate visits to the ship containing the following sequences:
00:00: April 1, 2012 – Exterior and interior of the ship.
07:15: April 3, 2012 – Night view of the ship (during a storm).
08:50: April 15, 2012 – Volunteers set all 29 sails on the ship in a full sail exhibition.
It was a fun opportunity to come aboard such a tall mast ship with all sails set.
