With Japan becoming busier and busier these days, a respite from the big cities may just be what you need for your next getaway. And as cities like Tokyo are continuously modernising with the addition of sleek new commercial complexes and towering skyscrapers, it can be hard to get a feel for what Japan was like back in the days of samurai and feudal lords. 

Although many of Japan’s historical spots have been lost to natural disasters, fires and redevelopment, there are still a number of areas that have managed to preserve their castle towns and former merchant districts, where you can stroll beautiful streets that look much like they did during the Edo period (1603-1868). Of course, there have been a few modern upgrades to these historical areas, and you’ll often find conveniences such as wonderful shops, restaurants and ryokan (traditional inns) dotted around these traditional towns.
