Engetsu Island in Shirahama – Wakayama (和歌山県白浜町円月島)

Engetsu Island seems to be the most unique rock formation and deserves to be the symbol of Shirahama. The island has been designated as the Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan. It is a small island extending 130 meters from north to south, 35 meter from east to west wit 25 meter height. The point that makes the island unique is the hole in the middle of the island taking shape by falling rocks due to wind and wave. It is very easy to be eroded because the island is made of conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone that the Shirahama town government has been afraid of the risk of collapse.
People call it Perfect moon island because in some days of year they can get the moon seen through it. But the sunset through this hole is the real treasure of Nature when you see the sun like a dazzling pearl born by the ocean. This place is selected to be one of 100 best rising suns and evening suns in Wakayama Prefecture and in Japan. Every day around the time of sunset, the Island attracts hundreds people gathering on the beach and waiting for the heaven moment. The Sun, while preparing to go to creep into the blanket of water, suddenly discovers many pairs of eyes looking at, immediately flares up with brilliant orange lights.
