Osaka to Tokyo for $16! Seishun 18 Kippu Ticket – Cheap Travel in Japan 青春18きっぷ 大阪 東京
On a beautiful Spring Saturday, I decided to take a LONG train ride from Osaka to Tokyo, with a twist.
Usually people fly, or take the Shinkansen, or even an overnight bus, but I’m not made of money. For ¥2410, you can take the scenic route with the Seishun 18 Kippu, a special discount ticket available for three periods during the year. That’s where the $16 in the title comes from, although I used the 3-day ticket which comes out to ¥3333. But you can do it!
There is a catch: you can only take the local or rapid trains on the JR network, but you are free to use them as much as you like for lifetime of the ticket. So no limited express trains, no shinkansens… this means you need to be strategic, and change trains several times.
So please join me as I go from Osaka to Tokyo, via Kyoto, Nagoya and Yokohama, from sunrise to sunset.
