BA has come under a lot of sharp criticism in recent months. The customer feedback has gone down in line with some aspects of the service and various budget cuts. In the Top 100 Airlines of 2017 now BA is only in #40 position on par with EasyJet. More recently, a survey from the UK consumer magazine Which? put BA in the bottom 3 of (European) short-haul airlines. As both surveys are directly based on customer feedback, it clearly contradicts BA claims that, for example, the introduction of Buy on Board was based on customers needs.
Now in South Africa, BA operates with a franchise partner: Comair. Comair operates domestic flights and some international flights from South Africa.
This video reviews British Airways’ flight from Johannesburg (JNB) to Durban (DUR), South Africa in November 2017.
Passengers can recognise many familiar aspects: the BA plane livery (apart from minor details), HighLife magazine (South Africa edition) and the Executive Club. Unlike BA, Comair has kept higher standards of service and still offers complimentary food and drinks. In Club, the food was rather copious and tasty for such a short flight.
Comair business lounge in JNB (called SLOW) has a much better selection for food and drinks compared to a similar size BA Club Galleries. I also thought that in Club, Comair has a better seat pitch but didn’t manage to find data to back this up. Comments welcome.
Comair comes across as an “old style” BA and this is not a bad thing. Well even Comair aircrafts were getting a bit old but on this recent flight I enjoyed one of Comair’s most recent Boeing 737-800s. So well done Comair – I’d love to try more of your flights.

The flight BA 6211 was operated by a Boeing 737-800 registration ZS-ZWH. This aircraft first flew in Nov 2016.
Great customer service in the Club cabin. The cabin crew was friendly and efficient during this short flight.
