Things to do and see in Okinawa, Japan: See Utinda Taki – Okinawa’s tallest waterfall
Utinda Taki is Okinawa’s tallest waterfall. The falls start about 90 meters above sea level on the edge of a sheer cliff and cascade to the ocean below. They are located about 6 kilometers before you read Hedo Misaki (Cape Hedo) which is the Northernmost point on Okinawa. The waterfall is NOT visible from the current Highway 58. The waterfall is visible from the old Highway 1 which ran around the outside edge of the cliff and right past the waterfall. Highway 1 became Highway 58 and eventually various sections along the shoreline were replaced with tunnels. This section of Highway 1 near Utinda Taki was replaced by a tunnel in the late 1980s. The old highway was eventually blocked off for safety reasons due to number landslides. You’ll see the old highway here in this video, and the results of the landslides too. It’s very difficult to get near the waterfalls. I chose not to try the walk and sent my DJI Air 3 drone to get video instead. Please note there are camera’s at both ends of the old Highway 1 so you might be on camera if you choose to try and get around the fences. :).
