Many Americans are traveling abroad to make the most of their money while on vacation. According to Expedia’s Spring Travel Outlook, there has been a surge in international flight searches, as travelers want to take advantage of the strong U.S. dollar in places like Japan and Mexico.

“The U.S. dollar is expected to remain strong for the first half of 2025, allowing travel budgets to stretch further when visiting international destinations,” said Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group brands public relations. “For Americans heading abroad, favorable currency exchange rates can be a significant advantage when spending on local goods and services.”

If you want to plan an inflation-fighting trip this spring or summer, consider one of these international destinations.

Japan

If you’ve been wanting to venture to Japan, now is a good time to do so.

“The current exchange rate from the U.S. dollar to Japanese Yen is quite favorable, making popular Japanese destinations more accessible for American travelers,” Fish said. “This spring break, Tokyo and Osaka show a 50% increase in flight and lodging searches, as U.S. travelers eagerly anticipate cherry blossom season beginning in late March.”

There’s no shortage of things to do in this Asian destination, even beyond cherry blossom season.

“Travelers can discover historic temples, beautiful gardens and traditional tea houses in Kyoto, or enjoy the vibrant food culture and fine dining in Osaka without breaking the bank,” Fish said.

It’s also worth traveling to Japan’s less popular destinations.

“According to Expedia, 63% of travelers are likely to explore less crowded, lesser-known ‘detour destinations’ on their next trip, such as Japan’s Yamaguchi and Nara Prefectures, where they can enjoy cherry blossoms and feed deer in Nara Park, all while saving by using Japan’s efficient public transportation system,” Fish said.

Mexico

“The current exchange rate from [the] U.S. dollar to [the] Mexican peso is slightly above average, making it relatively favorable if you’re looking to travel to popular destinations within the country,” Fish said.

Three of the top 10 spring break destinations this year include Mexican destinations — Cancun, Mexico City and San Jose del Cabo.

South Korea

Seoul is becoming an increasingly popular destination for Americans looking to stretch their dollar.

“The current exchange rate from U.S. dollar to Korean won is slightly above average, making it an attractive time for travelers to visit South Korea,” Fish said. “Data shows an unusual trend of travelers planning spring trips to the destination, with a notable 25% increase in lodging searches for Seoul.”

There are plenty of attractions in South Korea for travelers of all ages.

“Travelers can explore the grand Gyeongbokgung Palace, shop and enjoy street food in Myeong-dong, or have fun at the family-friendly Lotte World indoor amusement park,” Fish said.
