What is a Japanese ‘michi no eki’?

Japanese roadside stations or ‘michi no eki’ are famous among road trippers and tourists for their unique designs, great food and shopping options. They’re a perfect rest stop on a long car or bus trip, as well as a place to buy local produce or learn more about the area.

In this video I mention four of my favourite michi no eki I’ve been to so far:
🟢 Roadside Station Fukushima
A 15 minute drive out of Fukushima City, my coworkers say they go every weekend just to buy vegetables or eat lunch 😯

🟡 Madeikan in Iitate Village
Most popular in summer or winter, Madeikan is also a great stopping point for people heading east to the Soma Nomaoi festival in May.

🔵 Yotsukura Port in Iwaki City
If you’ve been exploring Fukushima’s east coast to learn more about the disaster, this is a good place to stop for lunch before heading into Iwaki City.

🔴 HOT / Roadside Station Yanaizu in Yanaizu Town
My favourite of the bunch, Yanaizu’s roadside station has a Chansey Park attached to it, plus footbaths and an excellent canteen. You can also paint an akabeko here!
