Hidden Singapore Food Street -RailMall & the Forgotten History of Singapore’s Rail Corridor

The Hidden Food Street at Rail Mall & The Rich History of the Rail Corridor
Rail Mall’s Hidden Food Street
Rail Mall, located along Upper Bukit Timah Road, is a unique shopping and dining strip known for its rustic charm. Unlike typical malls in Singapore, Rail Mall consists of a row of low-rise shophouses, reminiscent of old colonial times. The area has gained popularity as a food haven, with a mix of local and international cuisines.

One of the hidden food streets in Rail Mall is a cluster of eateries offering delectable hawker-style food, cafés, and specialty restaurants. It is not a conventional food street but rather a collection of well-loved stalls and restaurants that have stood the test of time. Some must-try places include:

Springleaf Prata Place – Famous for its crispy prata and fusion dishes like Plaster Blaster (Eggs Benedict Prata).
Acoustic Café – A cozy spot offering artisanal coffee and light bites.
Sixth Avenue Briyani – Known for its aromatic and flavorful Indian biryani.
New Teck Kee Chicken Rice – A long-standing favorite serving authentic Hainanese chicken rice.
What makes this food street special is its proximity to the Rail Corridor, allowing visitors to enjoy a meal before or after a scenic walk through Singapore’s historical railway heritage.

History of the Rail Corridor
The Rail Corridor is a 24km stretch of former railway land that once served as the Singapore-Kranji Railway and later the Malayan Railway (KTM). This historic railway line was operational from 1903 until 2011, connecting Singapore to Malaysia.

Early Beginnings (1903-1932): The Singapore-Kranji Railway was initially built to transport goods between Singapore’s port and Malaya’s inland regions. In 1923, the line was extended to Tanjong Pagar, linking it to the Malayan railway system.
British Rule & WWII (1939-1945): During World War II, the railway was a crucial transport route for the British and later the Japanese occupation forces.
Post-Independence (1965-2011): After Singapore’s independence, the railway continued operations under KTM, Malaysia’s railway company. However, in 2011, a historic land exchange agreement led to the return of railway land to Singapore, marking the end of KTM’s service in the city.
Today, the Rail Corridor has been transformed into a green trail, preserving the heritage of the railway while providing a recreational space for Singaporeans.

The History of Upper Bukit Timah
Upper Bukit Timah has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Once covered in dense forests and plantations, the area was a key transport route due to its proximity to Malaya.

Rubber & Quarry Industry: In the late 1800s, the area became an industrial hub for rubber plantations and granite quarries, fueling Singapore’s early economic growth.
Japanese Occupation (1942-1945): Bukit Timah was a strategic battleground during the war, with intense fighting taking place between the British and Japanese forces.
Urban Development (1960s-Present): Over the decades, Upper Bukit Timah transformed into a residential and commercial district while still retaining its natural landscapes, such as the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and the Rail Corridor.
Today, Upper Bukit Timah is a blend of history and modernity, making it a unique area where nature, heritage, and food culture thrive together.

My kunch of the days. Nice! Crispy batter and tender fish—can’t go wrong with that! 🍽️🔥with chili sauce and mustard, followed by a nice stroll around the park and Rail Corridor! 🚶‍♂️🌿 The fresh air and greenery must have made for a relaxing walk. Did you discover anything interesting along the Rail Corridor, like old railway remnants or scenic spots? 😊
