Winter destinations in Nagano – from hidden gems to famous landmark【長野･聖高原】
①Hijiri Plateau
Hijiri Plateau is a popular spot where you can enjoy the fantastic scenery of frost-covered trees.
⛄️❄️As we drove along the beautiful snow-covered mountain road, the glittering snow scenery continued. We started from Miwa Pass Parking Lot and planned to do a snow hike, but the snow was too deep so we gave up. Instead, we decided to enjoy a drive and a light walk.
Lake Nakamaki, famous for its beautiful frost-covered trees, had a quiet and tranquil scenery. No wonder that it’s a popular spot for photographers.
After that, we stopped by Suzuran Lake and found some animal footprints on the frozen, snow-covered lake surface. How cute and exciting:)

📍Azumino Okina
A soba restaurant opened by the owner who trained under soba master Kunihiro Takahashi for six years.
The buckwheat is carefully selected from domestically grown buckwheat and stored at low temperatures. Only the amount of buckwheat to be used the next day is ground in a stone mill the day before, resulting in a rich, fragrant finish.
From inside the restaurant, you can see the Northern Alps from the large windows, and feel the refreshing beauty of Japan.

③Gohoden Yusui Pond
Gohoden Yusui Pond is a famous place to see swans and other water birds.
🦢🦆Swans start arriving from late October, hibernate, and return north by the end of March. It is a popular spot for many photographers to take pictures of swans with the Northern Alps in the background.
There are many ducks near the entrance, so cute, and just watching them was relaxing.

④Matsumoto Castle
🏯The black-painted Matsumoto Castle is a national treasure with a majestic appearance.
It is a symbol of Matsumoto City, standing against the backdrop of the Northern Alps and the Utsukushi-ga-hara Plateau.
It is said to have started as Fukashi Castle, built during the Sengoku period (1504-1520), and underwent a major renovation in 1594. It is a sturdy structure prepared for battle, and inside the castle there are “slits” where guns and arrows can be fired at attacking enemy soldiers, and “stone drops” where stones are dropped from above on enemy soldiers climbing the stone walls.
It has five layers and six floors, and there are seven very steep staircases. The stairs get steeper as you go up, and I almost had to crawl to climb up. We had to take our shoes off before going up, so our feet got very cold. It was hard to imagine how people lived in the past.

①聖高原は、幻想的で美しい樹氷の風景を観賞できる人気スポット。
雪で覆われた美しい山道を車で進んで行くと、キラキラとした雪景色が続いており、どこを切り取っても美しい景色が広がっていました。三和峠駐車場からスタートして、スノーハイキングをするつもりでしたが、あまりにも深く雪が積もっていたため断念。代わりに、ドライブと軽い散策を楽しむことにしました。
美しい樹氷が見られる事で有名な中牧湖は、ひっそりと静かな景色が広がっていて、多くのカメラマンが訪れるのも納得できるような美しさでした。
その後、すずらん湖に立ち寄ったら、凍って雪が積もった湖面に、何かの動物の足跡を発見しました。可愛らしい足跡に心躍りました。

📍安曇野翁
そば打ちの名人、高橋邦弘氏のもとで6年間修行した主人が開いたそばの店。
国産の厳選されたソバの実を低温保存し、使用分を前日に石臼で挽き、香り豊かに仕上げている。店内からは大きな窓から北アルプスが一望でき、すがすがしい日本の美しさを感じることができます。

③御宝田遊水池（ごほうでんゆうすいち）
「御宝田遊水池」は白鳥が見られることで有名な水鳥の憩いの場。
🦢🦆10月の下旬くらいから白鳥が飛来し始め、越冬し、3月末頃までに北方に帰ります。多くのカメラマンが、北アルプスを背景にした白鳥を撮りに来る人気のスポットです。
入り口付近にはたくさんの鴨がいて、可愛い姿を眺めているだけで心が癒されます。

④松本城
黒塗りの天守閣が威風堂々とした姿を見せる国宝松本城。
北アルプスや美ケ原高原の山並みを背景に立つ松本市のシンボルです。
戦国時代（1504年~1520年）に造られた深志城が始まりとされ、1594年に大規模な改修が行われました。戦いにそなえた強固な造りで、城内には攻めこむ敵兵に鉄砲や矢をはなつ「狭間」や、石垣を登る敵兵に真上から石を落とす「石落」などが、いたるところにもうけられています。
五重六階の造りになっており、中に入るととても急な階段が7カ所あります。上に行くにつれてどんどん急になり、ほぼ這いつくばって登りました。靴を脱いで上がるので、足がとっても冷えました。昔の人はどうやって生活していたんだろう、などいろいろな想像が膨らみました。
夜にはライトアップも行われているので、また違った美しさを楽しむことができそうです。
