【Aomori】From Pleasure House to Cultural Landmark: The 125 Year Journey of Shin Mutsu Ryokan

📍 Echoes of History at Shin Mutsu Ryokan
Tucked away in Hachinohe, Shin Mutsu Ryokan is a rare architectural gem that carries the spirit of Meiji-era Japan. Built in 1898 as a traditional pleasure house, this ryokan later transitioned into a cultural treasure and was eventually designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Although now closed, the building’s ornate façade, curved entrance roof, and mysterious aura still captivate. During my visit, I had the chance to admire it from the outside—and even speak with a local neighbor who shared vintage photos and memories that brought the past vividly to life.
