養和元年（1181）神護寺文覚上人が京都、石清水八幡宮より勧請し創建しました。

その由縁は、文覚上人が源頼朝の為に源氏再興を発願し、治承年間（1177〜1180）上総国（千葉）鹿野山に参篭しました。源氏氏神と称え奉る石清水八幡の神に祈念をし、源氏再興の本願が叶えられれば勝地を探し求め八幡の一社を建立、末永く祭祀をせんと誓いをたてました。

養和元年大願成就の前兆を感得し、社殿建立の勝地を求め、各地遍歴の末に鹿野山に相対する浦賀西岸の現在地に石清水八幡宮の神を祭祀する社宇を建立し、文治2年（1186）神の霊験により源氏再興の大願が叶うたところから、叶大明神と称するようになりました。

In 1181, the first year of the Youwa era, the monk Munkaku of Jingoji Temple invited the shrine to be built by Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in Kyoto.
The reason for this is that Munkaku made a wish to restore the Genji clan for Minamoto no Yoritomo, and during the Jisho era (1177-1180), he retreated to Kanoyama in Kazusa Province (Chiba). He prayed to the god Iwashimizu Hachiman, who he regards as the clan deity of the Genji clan, and vowed to search for a beautiful place to build a Hachiman shrine and hold a memorial service there for a long time if his wish to restore the Genji clan was granted.
In the first year of the Youwa era, he sensed an omen that his great wish would be fulfilled, and after traveling around various places in search of a suitable location to build a shrine, he built a shrine to worship the god of Iwashimizu Hachiman-gu at its current location on the west bank of Uraga, facing Mount Kano.In the second year of the Bunji era (1186), thanks to the divine power, his great wish to restore the Genji clan was granted, and the shrine came to be called Kanae Daimyojin.
