Anpanman Train at Iyo-Mishima Station, Ehime Prefecture | The Real Japan | HD
Anpanman is a Japanese picture book series written by Takashi Yanase, running from 1973 until the author’s death in 2013. The series has been adapted into an anime entitled Let’s Go! Anpanman, which is one of the most popular anime series among young children in Japan.
The series follows the adventures of Anpanman, a superhero with an anpan (a bean-jam filled pastry) for a head, who protects the world from an evil anthropomorphic germ named Baikinman (‘Bacteria-Man’).
Anpanman’s food-related friends include Jam Ojisan, Currypanman, Shokupanman, Creampanda, Melonpanna.
Heavily merchandised, the Anpanman characters appear on virtually every imaginable children’s product in Japan, ranging from clothes to video games, toys, and snack foods.
And trains!
The Anpanman train runs across the Seto Ohashi Bridge from Okayama Station (Okayama) in Honshu to Matsuyama in Shikoku on the Yosan Line.
The Anpanman train is painted in a livery featuring the various Anpanman characters and the seats and headrests also feature an Anpanman theme.
The JR Rail Pass and the All Shikoku Rail Pass are valid on the Anpanman Trains, though express and Green Car supplements are payable. Seats can be reserved in advance.
Other Anpanman livery trains run on the Dosan Line from Okayama to Kubokawa via Kochi, and along the Tosa Kuroshio Railway Nakamura Line to Nakamura in Shimanto. This route is one of the most picturesque in Japan and passes through the Iya Valley and Oboke Gorge areas.
The third Anpanman train runs on the Kotoku Line linking the important cities and prefectural capitals of Takamatsu (Kagawa) with Tokushima (Tokushima).
Each line has its own livery, the Yosan Line trains have a white background, Dosan Line trains are brightly painted in more vivid colors.
In the carriages themselves Anpanman characters can be found on the seats, headrests, ceilings and even the curtains.
