✋Hello! Today we will go to a viewpoint from which you can admire one of the most active volcanoes in Japan. This volcano constantly smokes, and small eruptions can occur multiple times a day.

Sakurajima is a stratovolcano located in Kagoshima Prefecture, with a height of 1,117 meters. This volcano was originally an island, but during the 1914 eruption, a powerful lava flow connected the island to the mainland, creating a peninsula. The volcano has three main peaks: the northern (highest), the middle, and the southern, which is currently the most active, and many eruptions occur from the Showa crater on its eastern slope. It is forbidden to approach the volcano’s craters, but there are many viewpoints in the area from which eruptions can be observed from a distance of about three kilometers. Several thousand people live around the volcano on the peninsula, and ports for evacuation have been created there in case of a larger eruption. Due to the fertility of the volcanic soil, the area is famous for growing giant radish “Sakurajima daikon” and oranges “Sakurajima komikan”. For many travelers, the easiest way to get to the peninsula is by ferry, which runs between Kagoshima Port and the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal. Right by the terminal you can find many attractions, including an onsen, foot baths, short hiking trails and visitor center.
