Epic View of Mt. Fuji from a Shinkansen traveling at 300 km/h!!!
🌤️🚅 In the morning, as I traveled down to Nagoya under blue skies, I sat on the right-hand side of the carriage (a window seat). 🌤️ I managed to capture just under a minute of footage of Mt. Fuji with its summit capped in snow. 🗻✨ I also managed to catch two other trains heading to Tokyo. One was a Nozomi (のぞみ) super express, and the other was a Hikari (ひかり) service that had stopped in a station layby to let the Nozomi scream by. 🚄💨 Both my train and the Nozomi were cruising at their maximum speed of 300 km/h, making for a combined closing speed of around 600 km. Both of the trains going in the other direction went by in the blink of an eye. 🚄💨
For those unfamiliar with the Shinkansen services:
• Nozomi (のぞみ): The fastest train on the Tokaido Shinkansen, making fewer stops and primarily used by business travelers looking to save time. It travels at speeds of up to 300 km/h (186 mph). The destination display for Nozomi services is in yellow LED lights at night. 🌟
• Hikari (ひかり): Slightly slower than the Nozomi, making more stops along the route. It’s popular with tourists and those who prefer a more relaxed journey. The destination display for Hikari services is in red LED lights at night. 🌟
Typical Stops:
• Nozomi: 🚅✨ Tokyo 🗼, Shinagawa 🏙️, Shin-Yokohama 🌸, Nagoya 🏯, Kyoto ⛩️, Shin-Osaka 🌃.
• Hikari: 🚅✨ Tokyo 🗼, Shinagawa 🏙️, Shin-Yokohama 🌸, Odawara 🏯, Atami 🌊, Mishima 🌿, Shizuoka 🍵, Hamamatsu 🎶, Toyohashi 🚉, Nagoya 🏯, Gifu-Hashima 🏞️, Maibara 🚞, Kyoto ⛩️, Shin-Osaka 🌃 (more stops compared to Nozomi).
The service is literally minute-perfect. 🚅🕰️ There are slower trains and faster trains, but the whole system works seamlessly.
Pro tips: For the best chance to see Mt. Fuji, book seats on the right-hand side of the carriage (especially window seats) when heading towards Nagoya and beyond. For the best view coming to Tokyo, get seats on the left-hand side. Keep an eye out for the mountain once you enter Shizuoka Prefecture. 🌄 Also, note that the famous “trolley dolly” service of stewards/stewardesses pushing carts with refreshments through the carriages has been discontinued (at least on trains running between Osaka and Tokyo). To avoid the hassle of walking from carriage to carriage for food and beverages, it’s better to buy a bento and something to drink before boarding the train. 🍱🥤
