Monja is unique to Tokyo. Many people call it the okonomiyaki of Tokyo, but I think itโs something completely different. Locals love it though and it is something that can be found in Tokyo.
What fascinates me is the process of thickening the batter on the griddle. No eggs, just dashi stock, tonkatsu sauce, and a little flour. I agree, it may not be the prettiest Japanese food ๐ , but if it's yummy I'm okay with that. ๐
First of all definitely want to try this but also regular monja cause never had it. Secondly am I crazy or what cause I think a pizza monja, a taco monja and a kebeb monja done in this style would be fire.
Watching this made no sense. Sorry, but it's a pass for me. Watching fresh ingredients combined to look like mush and then having to scrape off the burned remnants to eat. Nope!
What! A burger monjayaki!! Iโm equally horrified and fascinated at the same timeโฆ Imagine all the variations there could be. And your view outside was stunning! I hope one day mom and I can try it! Thank you for sharing
I think the crispy bits on the bottom would be PART of what makes this so good! At least it looks REALLY good. Where I live, it would be easier to watch videos & try to make one myself! LoL Still, it looks amazing!
That would be a no for me, but mostly because I despise cooked cabbage. So I canโt do okonomiyaki either! Even eggrolls are a crapshoot unless theyโre at least 50% meat! The cook is cute, though. ๐
So essentially it's a deconstructed hamburger with dashi.
Being the American I am, I'd probably take one of the larger teppanyaki spatulas, scoop a bunch of it, put it on the intact hamburger bun, and eat it like a Sloppy Joe.
I think it's a cultural difference for me, but I really don't see the appeal of someone sitting at the table cooking the food in front of me.
It just seems awkward, and you either just sit there and watch them cook in silence, or you're having a conversation with a stranger instead of the people you're eating with.
Looks an unsightly mess, but in my experience this can taste absolutely great. The idea is easy to understand – flavors of the ingredients brought together and kept moist with broth and seasoning. Think it is probably very tasty!
I wouldnโt at this restaurant simply because Iโm allergic to eggs and gluten, but at a different restaurant with food I can eat yes, Iโd eat there. Restaurants like this are popping up all over the UK though I live in a medium sized town & we donโt have any. The nearest are in the next cities, but I have so many food allergies itโs rare they can accommodate me when we rang, they used so many things I couldnโt have and as itโs cooked for a group it doesnโt really work. But my family have been to them ๐
all of this looks so good to try! however, for myself (and maybe others) if you eat too much cabbage, GAS ATTACK!! my farts smell so bad, but it feels so good after getting rid of the gas. will clean you out that's for sure. thank you for the video! see you next time!
I generally consider Japanese food preparations to be pretty. While I understand you say each of these monja recipes tasted delicious, each one looks like pig slop. Very unappealing looking…… Thanks for sharing, though.
All the lovely things to eat out there ! this is just a deconstructed burger with that horrible plastic weird orange cheese ! Looked like pavement pizza lol Each to his own though I guess whatever floats your boat . Think Iโd enjoy the social side of it and a beer ๐

Cooking this seems like a major arm workout.
So true (title) as all I see is are soggy buns…i can't get past that
Hmmmmm. really not sure about this one. seems so crazy but bet is great
I don't think it looks ugly at all! Reminds me of a filled omelet or savory pancake. And that view!
Trust the process๐โคโคโคโคโค
In Italy, MANJA is "to eat". In Japan,…MONJA!๐โค

Donโt know exactly why, but this made me sad. I will say that the view, unlike the food, was visually appealing. ๐คทโโ๏ธ

Look like chop cheese sandwich from NYC bodegas ๐๐
I really thought it would be a full monjayaki burger.

"Please watch while we deconstruct a burger in front of you and serve it up in child size pieces"
Whatever, I'm in!

That's an interesting way to eat a cheese burger. I like it!
Thanks for sharing, Shinichi.๐
He could have just placed the cabbage and meat pattie into a blender right? He literally deconstructed the burger ๐๐๐

The cooking process exhausts me…
What a weird dish!! Looks good tho!
It may not look pretty, but it's guaranteed to taste good.

I am eating Natto and rice while watching!
Fun!!๐๐
If they put the monja on the buns, you could call it a Japanese Sloppy Joe!

Cooking a burger like this at an Australian bbq will get you arrested!
Sorry, it looks like something youโd make after coming home drunk and hungry and thatโs what you found in the fridge. ๐

Ahhh ๐ฏ so thatโs where it came from 100 girlfriends who really love you manga chapter 83 show something like this but in ramen. ๐
The burger one felt sacrilegious lol
Every time I see Monjayaki on YT, I am reminded of that scene from Gintama
