Japan’s Hidden Hot Spring Ryokan Under the Snow
I visited Nyuto Hot Springs in Akita, deep in Japan’s snowy Tohoku region. Soaking in a natural outdoor onsen while surrounded by deep snow is one of the most unforgettable ways to experience winter in Japan. From breathtaking hot spring scenery to traditional Akita mountain cuisine, this is a must-visit destination for any traveler.
Experiencing bath in public can be intimidating for the most of the visitors, but this Yamanoyado has private bath in both outdoor and indoor that you can take anytime during your stay without any additional charge. It’s a little long way to get to Akita, but I’m sure it will be a memorable experience for your Japan trip.

Beautiful winter scenery.
I have to say it again, your attention to detail when passing information to travellers is fantastic.
The only negative thing that I would say about this video is that I has made me very hungry after watching all that food 😊
Arigato for sharing this trip during winter. On my bucket list!😎🌺🌸🪭
Thanks!
Omg you went to Morioka region, a place that I visited in September 2023 and that I really loved !!! And this hot spring wow wow that’s my dream… thank you very much for this video Kenchan it made my day !!
This is an amazing video, thank you very much Kengo ! Nyuto Hot Springs and the Ryokan you stayed at, look absolutely wonderful. For me, a main highlight on my trips to Japan, is staying in a Ryokan, mainly for the baths and the food, but also for sleeping in a room with tatami mats and futons. The only thing which is a problem for me, is sitting on the floor, because after 10 minutes, my knees and back hurt. So eating in this Ryokan woud be a problem for me.
Can I ask when you visited ? We will be in Akita in March (only in Kakunodate, coming from Morioka and continuing to Niigata prefecture). I have still not decided if I should bring winter boots, because we are travelling for 4 weeks, and we will be the aera with potentially a lot of snow for 8 nights.
Hi Kengo,
Gorgeous, winter wonderland video. My kind of place.
The hotel looked warm and inviting and the food looked delicious. At a great price as well. I would love to cook a fish over those coals.
Relaxing in an onsen and enjoying the winter surroundings is one of my dreams. I had to chuckle at the comment about the men's changing room exit being under the spotlight. I can imagine my favourite Japanese artist, Utagawa Hiroshige, painting that scene.
This video is my favourite of yours so far this year.
Looking forward to your next adventure.
What a beautiful spot. The food cooking over the fire looked amazing!
What an amazing place. It seems very peaceful. Thank you for including so much travel information ( trains, buses, and accommodations). This is very helpful.
looks amazing…especially the toilet slide…for when you need to go in a hurry…
Good one though i think this is probably the most famous of all tohoku onsen (barring ginzan) especially during winter!
There are so many other amazing onsen that foreign tourists rarely go in tohoku!! Places like togatta, bandai atami, hanamaki, lizaka onsens all deserve more love!
It’s very beautiful place Kengo san! I really appreciate your winter adventure. I would love to go there and experience onsen someday. Thank you for sharing this 👍

I’ve subscribed to your channel and saving your videos for future reference, as we would like to travel next month. If you don’t mind me asking, what camera do you use?
Crazy to see so much snow ⛄️ I never see it here in Melbourne
