Okayama: A Historic and Scenic Destination in Japan
Okayama, located in the southern part of the Chūgoku region of Japan, is the capital of Okayama Prefecture. It boasts a mild climate and a rich historical and cultural heritage. Known as the “Land of Sunshine,” Okayama enjoys pleasant weather throughout the year, making it an ideal travel destination. Additionally, Okayama is famous as the birthplace of the legendary Japanese folktale Momotarō (Peach Boy), and visitors can find various attractions and souvenirs related to this beloved story.
Okayama Castle (Okayama-jō)
Built in 1597 by the warlord Ukita Hideie, Okayama Castle is notable for its striking black exterior, earning it the nickname “U-jō” (Crow Castle).
Originally an important stronghold during Japan’s Sengoku (Warring States) period, the castle was destroyed in 1945 during World War II and later reconstructed in 1966.
The castle now houses a museum showcasing its history, artifacts from the Sengoku period, and the cultural heritage of Okayama.
Visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Asahi River and Okayama city from the castle’s main keep, especially during cherry blossom season and autumn foliage.
Adjacent to the castle is Kōraku-en, one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, making it a perfect place to explore and experience the beauty of Edo-period gardens.
Kōraku-en: One of Japan’s Three Great Gardens
Kōraku-en is one of the most renowned gardens of the Edo period and is recognized as one of Japan’s “Three Great Gardens,” alongside Kenroku-en in Kanazawa and Kairaku-en in Mito. It was built in 1700 by Ikeda Tsunamasa, the feudal lord of Okayama, as a private garden, later opening to the public as a major attraction.

The garden features vast lawns, ponds, artificial hills, tea houses, and elegant bridges, embodying the essence of Edo-period feudal gardens.

오카야마 성 (岡山城, Okayama)
오카야마 성은 1597년 전국시대의 무장 우키타 히데이에(宇喜多秀家)에 의해 건설되었으며, 검은색 외벽을 갖추고 있어 “까마귀 성(烏城, 우죠)”이라는 별칭으로 불립니다.
원래 전국시대의 중요한 거점이었지만, 1945년 전쟁으로 소실된 후 1966년에 재건되었습니다.
현재 성 내부에는 박물관이 마련되어 있어 오카야마 성의 역사와 전국시대 유물, 그리고 오카야마의 문화유산을 전시하고 있습니다.
