Japan Fire Festival in Fukuoka

This is one of Japan’s three major fire festivals, Oniyo! 🔥👹

Every year on the night of January 7th, 6 massive torches are set ablaze and paraded around the grounds of Daizenji Tamatare-gu in Fukuoka. Despite the cold winter temperatures, the participating men dress only in loincloths.

Using pronged sticks, they methodically move the torches, chanting through the smoke, flames, and falling sparks. As the torches burn, the binding ropes are cut by brave individuals who climb atop the burning mass.

The falling sparks and ashes are said to bring good luck to onlookers and the flames are said to drive away the evil spirits. This tradition has continued for over 1,600 years and is a designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
